    Hello,

I've recently "recovered" from a rootkit, thanks to the help of broni in the Malware and Virus Removal forum.

During the diagnosis & cleanup process, several tools & utilities were used, which has resulted in some settings being re-set to (I assume) default.

Now that I'm clean, I need to do a fresh backup of my data, which I do on a flash drive using "smart" (U3) software.

When I insert the flash drive, the software won't execute (Autoplay is set on "prompt me each time to choose an action "). I can see the flash drive in Windows Explorer, but the execute file is greyed out.

When I double click on the greyed-out icon, it browses to C:\Documents and Settings\ "my user name "\Application Data\U3\000018372773AE4D. This seems like strange behavior to me...

How can I get the flash drive software to run when inserted?

Well, I'm looking at some replacement "non-smart" backup/sync software... I haven't been overwhelmed by the U3 system anyway, and I need to get a backup done. Thanks for the opinions.

I have Windows Home Server, which does automatic backups of the PCs/Laptops on my home network automagically. But, being a belt-and-suspenders kind of guy, I also periodically use Microsoft's SyncToy to copy my documents, pictures, and programming projects to an external USB drive.
