I have a Lexmark x1270 printer attached to a Vista machine and am trying to install the network printer

on a lanned Windows7 machine. I click on Start; Devices and Printers; Add a Printer; Add a Network,

Wireless or Bluetooth printer; and the Lexmark printer comes up in the list. BUT when I click the NEXT

button I get a "Windows cannot connect to the Printer" error and also "Operation failed with error 0x0000000d ".

What can I do to get this printer to install? I downloaded the latest driver from Lexmark for Win7 64bit and tried installing that but the driver/icon it creates in the printer section doesn't allow me to print (get error saying can't communicate with printer). I can share files between the printers fine and the printer itself IS shared as well on the Vista PC.

Any ideas (I called Lexmark support but they say they don't support printing between different versions of windows .. typical).

    Hi there
I've posted on this before but to share Printers attached to XP computers with either X-64 or X-32 versions of Windows 7 is SIMPLE. These instructions are for the Printer attached to the XP machine (but works in reverse as well).

( "Stand alone" Network printers can be done slightly similarly BTW).

assume the computers are call XPMACHINE and W7MACHINE.

    1) Ensure Printer on XP machine is shared - assume it's called SHAREDPRINTER.

    2) On the Network Browsing on your Windows 7 machine ensure you can "See" the Printer share.

Now on the Windows 7 machine do the following (doesn't matter if it's X-86 or x-64).

    3) Control Panel==> add LOCAL (Yes LOCAL) printer. I know it's on a Network but hold your horses -- what we are actually doing is "Poodlefaking" the Windows 7 machine into thinking it's running the printer.

    4) Create NEW port==>Local port

    5) Portname is \\XPMACHINE\SHAREDPRINTER

    6) Now, don't let Windows 7 install the drivers automatically, select the option "Have Disk" and browse to the folder where the Windows 7 x64 drivers that you downloaded are (make sure to have the package uncompressed first.

(For a "Network stand alone printer ") at 4) chose TCPIP port
and at 5) enter the IP address.

If the printer is on the Windows 7 machine and you want to print on the XP machine then do the same instructions on the XP machine --
port name in this case will be \\W7MACHINE\SHAREDPRINTER

    That's it.

Ok not sure about this that you mentioned:
"2) On the Network Browsing on your Windows 7 machine ensure you can "See" the Printer share.:

Do you mean when I try to add a printer? I've only seen the Network Browsing option when I try to add a network printer. Is there somewhere else I'm supposed to "Network Browse" to see the shared printer on the Vista machine?

I you mean can I see the network printer when I dbl-click on the Network icon on the desktop and choose the Vista icon then Yes, I see teh shared directories and the shared printer.

In any event I've tried this before.. and tried again and when I do "5) Portname is \\XPMACHINE\SHAREDPRINTER" using my share computer and printer (i.e. \\stryder\Lexmark 1200 Series) I get an error window saying "Access is denied" even though the printer did show up as shared in the Network wondow as did the directories I shared on the vista machine. Still some sort of access issue.

When you browse the network (using the network and sharing center) from the machine where you want to install the printer, you should be able to "see" that printer before attempting to install it. This is to make sure that the printer is accesible and there are no other issues that may prevent accessing it.

I have shared the printer on the Vista machine and have 'Everyone' in the security tab and when I dbl-click the Network icon on the Win7 machine I see the Remote computer icon.. if I dbl click it I can see the shared drives/directories and the shared printer.. but yet when I try to install it as you indicated above:

    i.e.
    ***
    1) Ensure Printer on XP machine is shared - assume it's called SHAREDPRINTER.
    2) On the Network Browsing on your Windows 7 machine ensure you can "See" the Printer share.
Now on the Windows 7 machine do the following (doesn't matter if it's X-86 or x-64).
    3) Control Panel==> add LOCAL (Yes LOCAL) printer. I know it's on a Network but hold your horses -- what we are actually doing is "Poodlefaking" the Windows 7 machine into thinking it's running the printer.
    4) Create NEW port==>Local port
    5) Portname is \\XPMACHINE\SHAREDPRINTER (I used my computer name and printer share name)
    ***

HERE I get a popup window with 'Local Port' in the title bar and the error 'Access denied'.

I also have 'Network discovery' and 'File and printer sharing' ON in Vista.

Don't know why is still can't access it.

I go through a router could it be stopping it> I dont see why if I can share files and directories fine.

There is another problem. Check these:
-Are both machines in the same workgroup/domain?
-Are the proper exceptions for file and printer sharing in the firewall?
-Are you using the Windows Firewall or other like Symantec/Norton?
-If not in a domain, make sure that the computer that is sharing resources has a user account that matches the account you are using in the other computer.

-Both machines are in the same workgroup
-exception is set in Windows firewall for 'file and printer sharing'
    -Windows Firewall
-there IS an account on the Vista machine with the same name as the Win7 machine

but regardless of these cases .. FILE sharing is working fine so why would printer sharing have an issue? If printer does file should too but I can see and copy files back and forth with no issue :-/

If all is as you said in your last port, it should work.
Question: Is your Lexmark a multi-function device? I experienced a similar issue trying to use my sister in law's Lexmark 1200 with my Windows 7 Pro x64 Dell Precision laptop and only the scanner function worked, the printer never worked. However, at home I have an HP Deskjet 6122 shared from a Server 2003 x86 box and it works perfectly with the above mentioned laptop and with another laptop, an HP-6830s running Windows 7 Pro x64 too. In both cases, I followed the same procedure for the printer installation. In fact, HP does not even provide a x64 driver for that printer, I am using the x64 drivers for the Deskjet 990c that are what HP recommends.

Turns out the IDS on the machines were different case-wise .. one had a capital in the first letter. When I deleted the id on the XP machine and recreated it with all lowercase as the Win7 machine had, I could print fine.

ODDLY, another ID I have on the Win7 machine has a Capital first letter while the XP id has ALL caps and that prints fine.

Go figure... I leave you to draw your own conclusions =-p

    Thanks for the help!
