Recently I installed Windows XP Proffessional on a fresh Maxtor 60GB HD. After a few days I would get an error message which came up "Windows file Protection" and stated that "files that the system needs to maintain stability have been replaced with unrecognizable files ". I'm then prompted to insert the XP install disc so it can fix this problem. Whenever I insert the disc it just keeps asking for me to insert the disc. After a second or two the install autorun screen pops up. After that the message goes away. Whenever I take the XP install disc back out the message reappears.

This is not where the problem ends. When I try to run certain programs that were working prior to the error message, I get the message "Blankety-Blank-Name-Of-File-Here is not a valid Win32 Application ". Also, everything in the admin tools folder brings up the same message when I try to run those programs as well as trying to access the command prompt.

Here is what I have tried:

Restored to a previous working state: Nothing
    Performed upgrade/install: Nothing
    Reinstalled XP entirely: Nothing
Changed format from NTFS to FAT32: Nothing
Reformatted Hard Drive and reinstalled: Nothing
Installed 98 then performed upgrade to XP: Nothing

I've tried every suggestion and idea that everyone I know has given me and nothing has worked. I need help!

One last note: This error message occurs on it's own, not during or after installing or running a program. I will go to sleep at night with everything running fine, then next morning the message will be waiting for me regardless of whether or not I leave the computer powered on or shut it down.

    Hi rvdsm

    Perhaps try:
Going to a Command Prompt and typing:

    sfc /scannow ?

You've done a recent and updated virus scan as well?

Click Start - Run and type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes). You'll need your XP CD so make sure that you have it to hand.

    Run an AV scan too.

    EDIT: Daizy
