I use Windows XP Pro, IE 8, and SP 3. I remember always being able to put my pointer on one of my favorite's names, click and drag it into any position out of alphabetical order I may choose. This feature is no longer working, the only choice it gives is to sort by name, can I get around this, and move the favorites to any location of my choosing inside the favorite's line-up?

Thanks to anyone that may be able to help!

I can drag mine anywhere I want and the Sort by Name moves em all back..

You can "beat" the system by renaming them like:

    1_Favorite Name
    2_Favorite Name
    ect.

Not in IE8 - you can click/drag to a folder.

Sorry to disagree PeteC but I have IE8 and have no problem changing the order of my favourites and they stay in place for good.

I've had a good look and can't see any way of changing the settings for this feature within IE.

Is drag and drop working with other programs?

    If not try this:

    Right click start,
    Select properties,
    Highlight start menu tab,
    Click customize,
    Highlight advanced tab,
Look down the list and check that Drag & Drop is enabled.

I stand corrected - the solid line between favourires in IE8 on 7 is obscured by the transparent facimile of the 'held' favourite more so in 7 than XP, especially at high resolution.

    No worries PeteC.

Since last post I have found what appears to be a setting for Drag & Drop in 'Internet properties - Security - Custom level'. This has baffled me as it does not seem to make any difference when it is disabled.

Unless there is some other method of editing the Drag & Drop feature in IE8 I think the best road to go down would be to re-install IE8. It may also be a wise precaution to do a full Virus and Malware scan (before re-installing) as another possible cause could be a corrupted or infected file.

I would Reset IE8 as a first step.
Tools > Internet Options > Advanced - Reset

I would also run in No add-0ns mode and see if the issue remains.

Right click desktop icon > No add-ons or all Programs > Accessories > System Tools - there somewhere - I haven't run XP for over a year :)

I really don't know what has changed, I could always put my pointer on any favorite in the line-up and drag it wherever I wanted. Now, when I put the pointer in place and drag; it causes a circle with a line through it to appear and move with the drag process, but the favorite name does not move.

I've never had a virus in any computer I've owned, the Trend Micro Internet Security has never allowed a virus to infect any of my computers. I also run Malwarebytes occasionally along with a couple of other scans, and they have never found anything other than spyware.

I keep this computer very clean, it boots completely in 50 seconds, which is good for a DSL connection and XP. There is something going on that I am totally unfamiliar with. It is really not that big of a deal, I just wonder what keeps things from working as they once did.

If you move the favourite very slowly up or down do you see the 'no entry' sign change to 'Move to Favourites'and a bold line appearing indicating where you can drop the file?

The slow part is what was throwing me, I've normally highlighted the favorite name and moved it very quickly, it no longer works this way. I can now say it will let me move it by the way you suggested, which is very slowly.
