At the end of October, Microsoft quietly released a Cumulative Update for Outlook Express Service Pack 1 (SP1). The Cumulative Update for Outlook Express 6.0 SP-1 contains fixes and enhancements to Microsoft Outlook Express 6.0 Service Pack 1 (SP-1). The Cumulative Update for Outlook Express 6.0 SP-1 also gets rid of all previously addressed security vulnerabilities that affect Outlook Express 6.0.

Arie--Many thanks. MS' new approach to not announcing updates is getting scary. This particular update is not mentioned on the OE Home page, on the MS Security Bulletin site nor by running Windows Update. I did finally find it by clicking on Downloads and then Critical Updates on the Internet Explorer Home page. Whew!! Who would think about looking there?
P.S. Windows Update (for Windows98, anyway) has also undergone several confusing changes recently. A week ago the site basically said no future updates would be available there, but rather we would have to go to a Windows98 site, which would list updates but not scan the individual PC. That site showed no updates newer than May 2, 2002.
Past updates, determined by earlier Windows Update scans would, however, stay at the Windows Update site.
Now the Windows Update site looks different, but acts like it always did--product update scan and all. No mention about having to go to another site to get new updates.

    What is Winmgmt.exe?

I D/L the cumulative patch, but when I was closing everything else to install I notched winmgtmt in box and a search revealed
    winmgmt.exe located in C:\windows\system\wbem
What is this? I did visit the new windows update site. did they deposit something on my machine without asking?

That seems to be a normal file owned by the Windows system and protected from change in NT based systems. I see that my copy reflects the date all the files were originally created (8-11-2001) and it size is 13kb.

    Winmgmt

Is it necessary to have it running all the time? In this new version of windows update it is in the list of things when I use
ctrl/alt/del I only need this thing for updates? Right? I assume it's loading from the registry since I can't find it in my start up list using msconfig.

Thanks for the help and the link on this.
