I have win xp. When I double click a .doc file Word won't open it. Word opens and a window pops up saying it can't find the file and reenter. I can open the file once Word is open by using the "open" command. I've tried over and over to right click the file and "open with" and set Word again, with no luck. I did a repair of Word and now I uninstalled it and reloaded Word...still no go. I dl Open Office and it has no problem opening the file when told to open with. thanks.

Have you looked in Folder Options > File Types tab? If not, go there, scroll down to .doc and change Word to the program that opens those files.

This may work, try clicking Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.

Now type assoc .doc and press Enter. It should be .doc=Word.Document.8

If it’s not, type assoc .doc=Word.Document.8 (note the space) and press Enter. You may have to restart the computer.

Rt bclick the file and select Open With. Then select Choose program. Then be sure to select Word as the default for DOC. It Open Wiith is not in the rt click context menu then hold down the shift key when rt clicking.

Thanks. I entered assoc .doc. It shows .doc=Word.Document.8.
I have rt clicked many times, "open with" and set it as def. but it doesn't take. Will open Word on dbl clicking the .doc file but still says it can't find the file.
(I have run malwarebytes with updates, spybot, and avast, with no negative results.)

The file may be a npn-standard DOC file with missing header data. Open it with Word again and use Save As and save it as the same name and replace the original.

This is a bugger, eh? I tried Save As for a couple of the .docs. No go. I've tried many of the dozens of files and none of them open.

Someone just gave me this link to try
    http://www.gmayor.com/Document_Not_Found.htm.
It actually mostly worked. I can now double click on a .doc and it opens...but the warning window still shows up. Interesting. Anyone know what I'm missing?

    Try this:

Start > Run > the command below
    Code:
    winword /r
That will recreate the Word registry entries and set its default file associations.

If no joy then the file associatioins themselves have been corrupted. You can try reinstalling Word via Add Remove Pgms.

winword /r apparently didn't work. I have already removed and reinstalled Office/Word earlier. Think I should do it again?

Is there a "repair" option in the installer?

Where would I see that? You're not talking about the detect and repair in Word under help?

I repaired Office. Now that "can't find" window doesn't pop up, but Word just opens when you double click a file ...doesn't open any file, just opens itself.

What version of Word (2003, 2007, 2010) etc?
    What operating system?
Do DOC files have the "W" icon?
Are the files DOC or DOCX?

Your file associations are corrupted. I may be able to locate the registry key you can import as a fix if I know the answers to questions above.

I don't have office xp/2002 installed on any of my comps.
My suggestion is to go to a comp with Word that is working well and compare the 2 File Types associations in Control Panel > Folder Options > File Types > DOC.
