My Windows Backup program has suddenly developed a problem. After it attempts to run, it shows this error message:

"A shadow copy could not be created. Please check "VSS" and "SPP" application event logs for more information. The specified object was not found. Error code: 0x81000019 "

I did a Search here and didn't find anything pertinent. I also Googled the error message and found several reports of users having the same problem and getting the same error message. A few solutions were suggested, some involving reformatting (which I certainly don't want to do if I can avoid it). Most of them were later said to not work. The few that worked involved recently loaded rather unusual programs as a cause, and I don't have any of them.

My hard drive is divided into C:\, D:\ and E:\ partitions, with the backup being sent to E:\. I tried reconfiguring the operation to aim it at D:\, and that didn't work even as well as the initial routine in E:\.

Within the past few days I have downloaded and installed a number of updates, all of them for programs that are common among WindowsBBS members. Among them were 2 "Important" ones from MS. I suppose it's possible one of all those updates is the culprit.

Everything else seems to be working fine, and the HDD is plenty big enough that inadequate available space is not the issue. A full system NAV scan shows everything being OK. And nothing in the error messages provides a solid clue as to the cause. So I'm stumped.

Any ideas on how I can fix this problem?

I was somehow able to view those two folders yesterday but today I don't seem to be able to. What's the path to them?

    The problem may be fixed.

I never did find the folder showing the VSS and SPP files I saw yesterday, but I went to Control Panel > Admin. Tools > Event Viewer and saw some listings there that included one about recent MS Updates not being installed correctly. So I went to the MS Updates site and this time there were 5 updates I was supposed to get. After I downloaded and installed them, it said that 4 of them installed OK and the 5th one was "Not needed." No red flag on the Action Center icon at first, but then it appeared and I was asked to run backup again. I did, and this time it didn't fail.

Everything appears to be OK now, so I'll mark this thread as Resolved.

You'll open Event Viewer & select Windows Logs > Application Logs. Next click on Create Custom View at the right. From the drop-down menu next to Event sources select SPP and VSS and click OK. Give the custom view a name and click OK.

Now you'll see the appropriate events.
