    Hello,

I am using Windows XP SP1. When open my computer from the desktop or any program, it takes about 4 or 5 minutes for it to appear. It like freezes with the flashlight moving back and forth. What is this caused by? How do I fix it?

Another thing is, I am using the most up to date IE. When I click in a website, say www.something.com, it just sits there, but when I type in http://www.something.com, it takes mere seconds. Why does the http:// need to be typed in? Is this a setttting that needs changing?

    Thanks, Jason

    Hi Jason
Could you give us a few system specs?
    Did this just start happening?
As a quick check...how large is your "My Documents" folder?

    Sorry, here are some specs:

    Microsoft Windows Xp
    Home Edition
    Version 2002
    Service Pack 1
    AMD Athlon(tm) Processor
1.01 GHz (actually 1.3, for some reason displays 1.01)
    256 MB of RAM

My computer was running very bad, freezing and just acting up really bad, including with this problem, so I ran disk defragmentor and it cured all the other problems, it runs fine now except for this problem. My Computer folder has just an A: floppy, C: main hard drive, D: DVD, E: Burner, and F:my old hard drive from past computer. There are folders which in include 4 my document folders, three for each of the users on this computer. There are a total of 9 items in the My Document folder.

ALSO, I just discovered another problem. , When I right click on a file or folder and go to "Send To.." the program im in freezes. For example, when I right clicked in My Computer I moved my mouse down to properties, but when it went over Send To and froze and I have to either wait like 2 minutes for it to unfreeze, or I have to use Task Manager. Thanks, Jason

    Hi Jason
Thanks for the extra info. Still not sure of the size of your My Documents folder?
Have you checked the simple stuff first?
    Recent and updated virus scan?
If not....Maybe start with one of the free online virus scanners then?

    Grisoft
    Housecall
    Panda
    Symantec

    And for Trojans.....might I suggest:
    Tauscan

    Checked for Spyware ?

Perhaps go into msconfig, and under the start up tab, uncheck any unneccessary things from running at start up.
(start...run...type in: msconfig click ok...and check under the start up tab)
Here are two links to tell you what those items are:

    Msconfig entries
    and
    More of the same

Dusted your computer out lately with canned air?

    Been through msconfig?
Opened the case to see that all fans are running and you've not got a heat problem?

Browse to c:\windows\prefetch! Highlight and delete all here!

    Run start progams-accessories-system tools-disk cleanup!

    Rboot!

This should help both bootup time and your problem with My Computer!

If still problem let us know!

Yes, I have done msconfig and cleaned the disk and prefetch. I dusted and cleaned and all fans are running. The problem still exists. I think my two problems are related. The problem with My Computer taking a long time to show and freezing when right-clicking on a file/folder and going to send to... and it freezing.

The ole flashlight routine indicates it is searching for a file and unable to find. Apparently, the address and the target do not match. Not possible to fix unless you know the file that is being looked.

If the problems occurred after you installed SP1, you may be experiencing problems associated with the patch. I had problems that were weird and a general instability of the system after downloading the patch. I had to uninstall and that corrected the problems. If everything else fails you may want to uninstall the SP1 and reinstall and take particular notice and caution that all open programs are closed and there is a clean installation.
