Open Windows Explorer. Go Tools>Folder Options>View tab, put a checkmark next to Show hidden files, and folders.
Upload following files to http://www.virustotal.com/ for security check:
    - c:\windows\system32\comcat2.dll
IMPORTANT! If the file is listed as already analyzed, click on Reanalyse file now button.
    Post scan results.

    I don't have a COMCAT2.dll file in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32
    I only have a COMCAT.dll

Is there much more to do? I thank you very much for your efforts so far but it just seems to me that it would have been easier and quicker to reformat and reinstall.

Are there many more steps to go?

    No, not really.

By now, your computer should be pretty clean, but we need to complete all cleaning process steps.

    Uninstall Combofix:
Go Start > Run [Vista users, go Start> "Start search"]
    Type in:
    Combofix /Uninstall
Note the space between the "Combofix" and the "/Uninstall "
Click OK (Vista users - press Enter).
    Restart computer.

    ================================================================

    Download OTL to your Desktop.

    * Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
    * Under the Custom Scan box paste this in:

    netsvcs
    drivers32 /all
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*
    %systemroot%\system32\Spool\prtprocs\w32x86\*.dll
    %systemroot%\system32\*.wt
    %systemroot%\system32\*.ruy
    %systemroot%\Fonts\*.com
    %systemroot%\Fonts\*.dll
    %systemroot%\system32\spool\prtprocs\w32x86\*.tmp
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    /md5start
    /md5stop
    CREATERESTOREPOINT
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\user32.dll /md5
    %systemroot%\system32\ws2_32.dll /md5
    %systemroot%\system32\ws2help.dll /md5
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\Results\Install|LastSuccessTime /rs

    * Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows: OTL.txt and Extras.txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them back here.

Update your Java version here: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

Note 2: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.

Now, we need to remove old Java version and its remnants...

Download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
    • Run JavaRa.exe (Vista users! Right click on JavaRa.exe, click Run As Administrator), pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
    • Accept any prompts.

Wow the Kaspersky scan is complete at last (after running for 3.5+ hours).

I cannot find CHECKUP.TXT (from SECURITYCHECK). I thought that I saved it but after a SEARCH of my entire system it cannot be found - I guess I am so tired from this very taxing process (do you blame me?).

The report produced by Kaspersky was EMPTY (no treats found).

    Update Adobe Reader

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
Note. If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Alternatively, you can uninstall Adobe Reader (33.5 MB), download and install Foxit PDF Reader(3.5MB) from HERE.
It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.
Note: When installing FoxitReader, make sure to UN-check any pre-checked toolbar, or other garbage.

    Thanks Broni

Thanks for all the time you have given.

In restrospect though I now think that I would have chosen to reformat and reinstall everything. I don't have a huge amount of applications installed and think that I could have perhaps reformatted and reinstalled everything TWICE in the time it has taken me to do all that you have advised.

I think that I picked up my malware from a website even though I have some plugins installed which warned me against entering some websites.

A few months earlier I seemed to have picked up a 'bug' when attempting to play a video file either downloaded or given to me by someone as I can remember Windows Media Player displaying ACQUIRING CODEC and never either 'acquired' and downloaded it or advised that it could not be found - I ended up aborting. A short time later I was aware that I had picked up some malware - can this happen in this way?
I got out of that problem by RESTORING WINDOWS to a day prior to when I tried to play the video file.

THIS TIME however when I attempted to do the same I found that I had NO previous restore points - I guess the malware had erased them.

IS IT POSSIBLE to backup restore points and use them later should they 'disappear'?

ALSO please advise and BACKUP utilities which I could use to backup my entire system whcih I could use to RESTORE my system after a REFORMAT should I get 'infected' again. I know of GHOST but I was wondering if there is a freeware application to do similar.

I WILL attempt to run Malware bytes and TFC regularly.

LASTLY my PC now appears to have an extra 'hardware profile' (as my system boots up I briefly see a page displayed which appears to be one which invites the selection of the required profile (I think that one of the selections (the default) is Windows XP). The profile is NOT listed in SYSTEM>HARDWARE>HARDWARE PROFILES.
Please advise what it could be and how do I get rid of it.

    Thanks again.

Haha....you should have told me after couple of posts, not after 3 pages....

    We just reset them, so...
Acronis True Image: http://www.acronis.com/ - not free, but the best

    Free alternatives:
    - Macrium Reflect: http://www.macrium.com/ReflectFree.asp
    - DriveImage XML: http://www.runtime.org/driveimage-xml.htm (tutorial: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial160.html)
    - SelfImage: http://www.excelcia.org/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=21
    - Paragon Drive Backup: http://www.paragon-software.com/home/db-express/

It's not a profile, but recovery console option, rather crucial feature for troubleshooting.

    In any case....
Good luck and stay safe :)

Sorry but never did I receive ANY information to indicate how much was ahead of me.
Every time I received a reply I thought that this was the finish only to receive another post with more downloads/procedures.
Not sure if you knew exactly what was necessary to complete the 'clean' until after each 'log' was posted but if you did then perhaps in future you could forewarn that the 'clean' process would take 'x' steps and approximately 'y' hours to complete and then leave it up to the user to decide if they wanted to proceed.

Don't get me wrong I am VERY appreciative of YOUR time but in restrospect if I had been forewarned I probably would have saved YOU time as well as myself (and performed a reformat/re-install).

I guess though that I have been made aware (by yourself) of some useful applications.

Maybe I misled you regarding this. What I meant was that once I detemned that I had become infected (BEFORE I contacted Windows BBS) I decided to try and RESTORE but there were NO restore points (and I had NOT removed them).
I realise that 'we just reset them'.

Please advise HOW then I utilise the recovery console option and under what circumstances - or point me to a web site explaining it all.

Thanks again for your never ending assistance

I never know, either. It's not predictable. I must run as many tools, as is needed to make sure, your computer is clean.

Do you have any restore point listed now? Some malwares will disable system restore.

As for recovery console, it's used, when the computer is not bootable from normal, or safe mode, or, for some reason, we have to access your drive from the outside of Windows. Some diagnostic tools may be run from recovery console.
At this point, the most important thing is, it's there, so you're safer in case of some disaster.
