:( Can someone help please. I received an email and this window popped up "Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page. As a restul the page may not display correctly.

Also I tried to send an email from a web site using my default email, and had about 65 windows open on screen and message saying this is not default mail handler. Help please.

OE is by default placed in the Restriced Sites Zone which, also by default, prevents the running of ActiveX controls (which could potentially be hostile). More information about these settings can be found here.

Re the second issue: open OE and click Tools - Options. Under the General tab, click "Make Default" and then click apply.

brett--I'll be looking forward to seeing the reaction of joan_uk01 to your suggestions.
When I read her questions, I saw that all sorts of windows were opening in situations that should not call up windows. For example, I never get an ActiveX message window when I get email, even though, as you say, I have OE set up to open in Restricted Zones.
Now it is not clear from her post whether this window is opening before or after she opens the email or whether the email has an attachment. Especially if that ActiveX message appears before she actually opens the mail, that seems pretty strange. But I have no answer for it.
And ~65 windows opening just to tell her that her alternative email program is not the default??

P.S. (Of course the messages themselves are innocuous, and can just be turned off by clicking OK.)

Thank you for your replies. The first one I checked and my zone is set at medium which I think should be okay.

To my second question....I went to OE clicked on tools then options, but the area which says make default is grey and I can't click on that....any suggestions?

As to these windows opening I went to a website where I am a member, click to send an email to someone in our league where I am a member...that's when I got all the windows open with that message.

Copy the line below and paste it into the Start - Run dialog box:

    "c:\program files\outlook express\msimn.exe" /reg

Reboot. Open OE and look to see whether OE is now set as the default or whether the button is now available (if the button is available, but OE is not set as the default, then click the button!).

If this doesn't work, open My Computer and click View - Folder Options - File Types. Scroll down the list and click (once) on the entry for "url:mailto protocol ". Now click Edit and Edit again. You'll see a box entitled "Application Used To Perform This Action ". Copy and paste the following line into this box:

    "c:\program files\outlook express\msimn.exe" /mailurl:%1

    Click Ok and then reboot.

    And ... is it fixed?

If not, run an anti-virus scan.

BTW - I was talking about OE's security options rather than IE's and there is no medium setting! Open Outlook Express and click on Tools - Options - Security. You'll see two options - Internet Zone and Restricted Sites Zone. OE should (rightly) be in the latter Zone.

I'd simply delete the mail in question unless you are certain that it is from a trusted and safe source.

Nor do I - but, erm, as I view mails only in Plain Text format it's unlikely that I would :D

I have first hand experience of this one! It usually happens when you install a client other than OE but do not select that other client to be the default handler. For some reason, this seems to thoroughly puzzle the OS

:p Thank you all very much for your very quick response to my questions. Have done what you suggested and it's all as was on originally. Can only think all those windows being opened was a glitch...so fingers crossed.

Would like to thank Ronnie for putting me in touch with this site and can be assured I will be checking daily to see if I can pick up any tips. Thanks again everyone
