Hi all, new to using Win 2000, and so far, I love it!:D Far more stable than my old system.

My only problem is, I have added a 60Gb slave drive, but I'm not familiar with how to get 2K to assign a drive letter to it...with Win 98, I could go thru the whole format process, but it doesnt give me the option here.
When I go to disk manager, it shows the HD, but lists it as unknown

    Thanks in advance

Right-click on the drive and it will give you all sorts of options such as format and assign drive letter. A word of caution, DO NOT mark the partition activeas it will mess up your system booting. I've seen many inexperienced techs do this.

I have not gone beyond forty gig and
so 60 might have some extra issues but
given your drive is installed corecltly and
formatted with the proper hard drive
software, not fdisk, it should be D drive
if your only master drive is C: or E: if your
CD is D: This should happen automatically.
Again be sure you have installed the
drive. I am installing and uninstalling
drives all the time and as long as
they are connected and pinned properly and setup or formatted there is no
issue with a drive letter. If all
this checks out pin in set for slave..check
    for 60gig issues.

I tried the right click, but format is grayed out. I'll double check the jumper, but I'm pretty sure I had it right...

You will need to be logged on with an account that has admin rights to the PC or else you will just see that ugly gray.

You did fdisk the drive when you installed didn't you? And it should have been fdisked as an extended partition!

If not, the computer OS will see the drive but can not assign a drive to it!

If it is a major brand then it came with a disk utility to prepare the disk!

If not try to download one from the web site of the Mfg!

If it has been Fdisked then it would allow w2k to format!

If it has been Fdisked then have you used tweakui or some tweaker to reduce the available drive letters!

Also go to device manager and set all removeables (except a: of course) to letters greater than d:

    Let us know!

    Mike
