    Hello!

I have a Lenovo IdeaPad S9 laptop which comes with Broadcom 802.11g Network Adapter. Originally, it is Windows XP Home Edition. Now I upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate and encountered the following problem:

    1. When associated with the access point, the built-in wireless network adapter has poor signal quality. Therefore, I added another USB adapter, HWL2 WiFi Locator Professional Edition (refer: http://www.hawkingtech.com/products/productlist.php?CatID=32&FamID=60&ProdID=198), which has better signal quality when associated and faster speed.

    2. It worked pretty great when I was using Windows XP: Connect to access point through HWL2 WiFi Locator Professional Edition with no problems and work smoothly. However, after upgrading to Windows 7,only Broadcom 802.11g Network Adapter can assocate with access point. HWL2 WiFi Locator Professional Edition needs "Network Authentication" while connecting before entering the password.

    3. I have Googled a lot and known this might be caused by the 802.1x authentication. I then searched for disabling 802.1x authentication, but the tutorials provided for Windows 7 are not applicable for me - Still, Network Authentication dialog box.

    4. The access point is a public one, which has WEP enabled and router configuration password set on. I tried the information I Googled and wanted to log in the router to modify the authentication settings. However, because of not knowing the password, I cannot make further changes.

    5. Okay, now I can only browse the net with the Broadcom one slow adapter, but not the HWL2 one. the links are the pictures show what I am currently encountered:

    Network Authentication Window:

    Internet Connection:

Security Settings for the network (Broadcom and HWL2 have the same settings):

Can anyone give me some suggestions in solving this problem? I am really appreciate that. Thanks! :)

Since you can connect with one adapter, you have the correct key.

The problem could be you have defined HWL2 network as Public network in firewall. Just check it & change it to work or home.

Sorry about the late reply, rsinfo. After trying for a few days, it works now. Thanks for your help, rsinfo. I am really appreciate that.

I changed the settings of the firewall, made the WEP network as Home network. Then tried reconnecting via HWL2. However, it did not work. I then restarted the computer, crossing my fingers and hoped the tweak would take effect. Well, again, no luck.

Just at this moment, I disconnected the connection of the Broadcom one and unplugged the HWL2 then plugged it back. Click on the Internet Connection icon which is located in the tray. Then selected the network on the HWL2 and clicked "Connect ". Awesome! It worked! No annoying "Network Authentication" window but instead of "Type Network Security Key "! I quickly typed the password and associated with the access point. Then waiting for the password validation. After the validation, I saw it got connected with "Internet access "! Wow! I couldn't believe what I am seeing! It is functioning!

Thanks again, rsinfo. Your help really solve my critical problem in associating with a access point. :)
