I have a desktop computer that is running XP Pro with SP3. It is connected to a wireless router. I am trying to copy files to and from this computer to my lap top that is running win 7 Ultimate. I have made sure they are both in the same work group, I have adjusted permissions and sharing every way I can figure out and I still can not copy the files.

After numerous efforts and trying everything I can find on the web, if I locate the file on the desktop (from the lap top) and try to copy it, it says that I do not have permission to make the copy. If I try to access the laptop from the desktop, It says that the laptop is not accessible.

I was able to do this before (after spending hours trying different solutions) but had to reinstall the OS and now can not figure out how to get it to work.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

When I upgraded my desktop from Windows XP to Windows 7 I first put all my files onto an external hard drive. After the upgrade I transferred the files back into the desktop. Several weeks later I upgraded my laptop from Windows XP to Windows 7; and again transferred my files from the external hard drive to the laptop. Everything went smooth as silk with both computers. Hope this helps.

    Hi bsole,
To set workgroup in win7 go to system, (computer name, domain, workgroup settings) click change settings, regardless of o/s both or all should be of the same workgroup eg : oursole, with an individual computer name. ie: bsole-dtpc, bsole-ltpc also try different descriptions!

to set sharing got to network & sharing centre, advance sharing options, turn on : network discovery, file & print, public folder, Turn off password protected sharing!

in winXP go to system, click change computer name, follow the steps above for win7

to set sharing right click on the folders you wish to share, follow the prompts, similary in win7

if the sharing of user folders in winXP is still not acceptable then move/copy the folders to the public user folder.

another way and a lot easier is to buy a Belkin easy transfer cable, they retail here in australia for about $50

    regards Jac

Thanks for the responses. I have already tried most of the suggestions mentioned without any luck. I finally solved part of the problem (at least I can get by for now). I found a post on a site that said you had to set up a guest account on the Win 7 computer and give it complete access. I did that and I can transfer files to and from the Win 7 computer from my XP computer. I now have to figure out how to be able to transfer files by using the Win 7 computer.

I will take a little time tomorrow to try a couple fo the other suggestions mentioned in your responses. Thanks

Make sure on Windows 7 you have the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks installed and active on the LAN connection.
