I want to update to the latest version of WORD. I have an old version (2002-10.2627.2625). It is licensed to me with a product ID. I have been using that version for medical transcription so it has my standard Word dictionary in it, that apparently filled up because it no longer accepted words, and then I created a custom dictionary, which I'm still using. However, it's imperative I get both dictionaries exported so that I don't lose them in the interim. That would be disastrous.

I did a little googling, and found some information on how to locate custom.dic. However, my computer does not find ANY custom.dic.

I then browsed around in my Microsoft applications, found Microsoft Office > Office 10 > THDIC and TRIGRAM, which both say Dictionary File.

I copied the THDIC and put on my desktop; however, it just seems odd that it copies so rapidly -- usually when something has a lot of mb you can see it copying from one folder to another. This one just plunked down on the desktop making me think I was just copying an icon or something. I looked at the properties of it and it DOES have 106KB.

If someone could direct me on how to make SURE both dictionaries have been exported, or where I might open them to view them -- or even view it in Word -- just to make sure it DOES have words in it, and that it IS what I need to SAVE, that would be very helpful.

    Thank you.

    Hello PJ,
    welcome to Windows BBS ... :) ... !

I removed your email addy. Having it "out in the open" on a forum makes it an easy target for harvesting.

***welcome to Windows BBS . . . I removed your email addy.****

Christer, thank you! and thank you! I appreciate that.

Arie, I located (with your instructions) the "two" dictionaries: custom and medical. If I just save to my desktop, then I'll be able to save on a CD and transfer.

Thanks for taking me down the correct "path" to locate them.

Hopefully, importing them won't be too difficult. I'll actually try it on my laptop to make sure I've done everything correctly, before "losing" the old version of Word. <holding breath> SMILE!

Thank you again VERY much for your FAST reply! and explicit instructions! SMILE

Thank you so much! WHOOO HOOOO! It all worked GREAT. I couldn't find the dictionaries on my laptop, but because you explained where to find them by going to Tools > Options, etc., I just went there and copied and pasted the dictionaries using the New > Add. Then held my breath and typed in a few medical words I knew Word wouldn't have had unless it was using my medical dictionary, and it was perfect!!!

Thank you so much!! I really appreciate your help!!

I wonder if the newest version of Word (I don't know what that is at this point as I've been using 2002 for so long) will accept a dictionary from a 2002 version? That is a scary thought.

True! LOL But if I wait too long, and the versions get so far ahead of me, then maybe I will totally lose my dictionaries and have to start over. I just like to think ahead! SMILE Some offices don't have the 2002 version, and I want to always be able to import my dictionaries into their Word version.

I didn't find any definite answer regarding compatibility, but i you reed this Microsoft support document: How to add a custom dictionary in Word, one could conclude the custom.dic is compatible across all versions.

If this answered your questions, please mark your thread as 'Resolved'.
