See if there is anything of help in this thread .....

XP hangs on startup with activation problem

Is the version of XP on your install CD at the same Service Pack Level as the OS on the computer?

Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Create Bootable CD

Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 3 and Create Bootable CD

Has your MSDN key been used on another computer as well? - not that you would be able to activate an install on another computer.
    That is correct.
All system files are replaced when making a Repair install.

Resolved somewhat as it was a series of unrelated events (I guess) - I am up and running. The freezing after logging in was attributed to a "known ", at least by google standards of problems with reinstalls of XP breaking IE8. The 30 day time clock was ******* so it was trying to activate XP (which needs IE) immediately without letting me log in. A simple install of IE8 in safe mode fixed the problem and I got activated and logged in. Everything seems to be running fine, less a few start-up problems because I now have 2 physcial drives with the exact same data and some services got confused when I de-coupled the raid and are trying to start on the D drive - hope to fix this when I set Raid 1 back up later tonight.

    Thanks for all the help!!
