Unable to access work laptop from my desktop

I have a LAN with a desktop and a router/modem installed. I use Windows 7. I also have a laptop, that previously had Windows XP. Previously eveything was part of my network (not homegroup), both printers worked from the desktop and I could print from my laptop basically via the router and my desktop. I also used Synctoy to backup data from my laptop to my desktop. I live in Johannesburg, our head office is in Cape Town.

Our laptops were updated in Cape Town last week and also has Windows 7, but I suppose, was set up with all administrative "blocks" in Cape Town.
So currently:

1. I can "see" each computer on the other one
2. I can print with the laptop and desktop
3. But, I cannot access the laptop from the desktop

If I click on the icon of the laptop on the desktop, it states that I do not have admin privilege to do so. I cannot install Synctoy.



I tried the following on the laptop, to try and bypass this "block" as I want to back up over weekends- the office personnel can do that directly to the server, but my files/ presentations are often too big.

Control Panel- Admin Tools-Computer Mx-Storage-Disk Mx-R click on dive-Prperties-Security-Clicked "Everyone user "-unclicked Admin- Allow-Full control- but still unable to access the laptop.

Even if I can create a seperate user on the laptop, it will help.

Any advice?

You would need administrator password for your computer to setup file sharing. Contact your Cape Town office & tell them what you are trying to accomplish. They may perhaps make an exception & grant you administrative access.

So I suppose, even if I create another user, which I struggled with yesterday, it will not be possible to synchronize just with that user?

 

Creating a new user is not going to help you [even if you could create a new user as you don't have Administrative rights].

What you require is to give others on the network to access files/folders on your laptop.

Why not do it another way:

Zip all the files/folders that you want to backup & copy them to your desktop from your laptop. You can even create a batch file or schedule it.

 

I was just thinking- I have an external HD that is connected to the desktop. That is my final backup for everything. Perhaps if I connect this HD to my laptop and try to back up also from my desktop. Dont know if that will work though.

 

It would work.

It would be faster & better if you connect the external HDD to your laptop & desktop independently for backup. Pulling lot of data over LAN would slow things down.

 

I have now established that the laptop is totally blocked- cannot even install programs like Picasa, Photoshop, Nero, etc.

Any advice please, or has the administrator blocked everything????

 

Your laptop has been locked down. You must have Administrator password to do anything.

I wonder if external hard disk would work as you may need Administrator privileges to install drivers.
