Previously my wife's new laptop was connected to a Netgear router and then on to my old win xp desktop and each could access files from each other with no problem.

That has all changed as having just installed my new win 7 desktop and connected it all up we are still both are able to access the internet and to see each others pcs but we are having trouble with the set up. I am sure I have done it all wrong as now her laptop requires a network username and password which I dont believe I have even set up.

To put it bluntly I am sure I have messed up the settings!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can someone provide me with a step by step set of instructions that will sort out the problems for me please?

Hi Gullrock, on your desktop, go into the network & sharing, advance sharing options, turn off password protection sharing

Thanks for those links however I am now trying to connect 2 windows 7 pcs in a wired network and the links seem to suggest ways of connecting different operating systems?

Well that was simple! It all now works thank you very much. It is really simple when you know how isn't it?

    Hi Gullrock,
I just noticed you say you are now running 2 x win7 computers, my original suggestion is the easiest way if you have not set up a homegroup? But you will probably find that you will need to still turn off the password as you have
Homegroup controls the networking for a home/small business enviroment where all computers run win7, instead of the old home network; which is still there for connecting to a computer running a different version of windows, you can still use this way if you like

    control panel/all items/homegroup

    regards Jac
