My mouse exhibits sporadic behavior, ever since I got this Win7 (64) machine....altho I click with average speed, the screen almost behaves like it can't respond to the click fast enough, so I have to repeat the click.

Since I have the latest Win7 mouse driver, I'm beginning to suspect the mouse hardware; it takes 4 or 5 clicks to open menu bar items (eg, bookmarks), drag-to-highlight text disappears (unhighlights) immediately, drop down menus can't be opened because they close immediately, it takes 3 or 4 tries to place a cursor in midst of a text field (it highlights instead), the go-back one page button in FF3.6.8 and IE8 goes back two pages, pages get skipped when I'm using an Install Wizard, etc. Many mouse actions (but not all) take 3 or 4 tries. Ever hear of anything like this? Any idea what the problem might be? I'm using the default mouse settings.

Are you using Logitech software, notoriously buggy? If you are, try removing the Logitech driver, and let Windows find the mouse and install the driver itself.

Whenever you have a suspected mouse problem it is always a good idea to try another mouse - wired or wireless.

r.leale.....I had the same problem when I didn't use the Logitech driver. I tried to solve the problem by using the Logitech driver. That sort of means it might not be the Logitech software, yes?

Pete...a wired mouse works fine. The physical layout on my desk is the same as it was when I had XP, so I don't think it's an RF problem.

FWIW...I've been in touch with Logitech, they've half-admitted it may be the driver (but I'm not sure about that). My combo is the LX300 (old); they recommended what driver to use, tho it's not posted on their website (later models are posted, along with the correct drivers).

    Have you tried the drivers?

Look in Control Panel -> Programs and Features for any programs that might influence the mouse. For example, if it is a laptop, any touchpad software might be influencing it. Some OEM computer manufacturers install software for the keyboard and mouse they supply with the computer. Find updated software, uninstall the old software, start testing the mouse. Install the new software if you need it.

You can go to Device Manager and uninstall the mouse under the heading Mouse and also under Human Interface Devices. Two ways you can get the mouse detected is to startup with it connected or wait until Windows is loaded and then try connecting it.

You can also try uninstalling the drivers with the wired mouse connected, shutdown or restart, then try connecting the Logictech mouse.

    G'day, Mattman

[I used to live in Kirribilli, when I was head of Optus Mobile. Sydney is an unbelievably beautiful place.]

You bring up a couple of interesting ideas. I've already ordered a new [Microsoft] combo, since my present Logitech is old anyway. If the M$ doesn't work either, I'll be trying your suggestions. I'll post back when things have developed. Cheers........

I would like to see your part of the world, sounds quite spectacular. Glad you enjoyed your time here.

I would just suggest to try connecting the new combo without installing any drivers or software. If it works (you might miss one or two minor functions), I wouldn't push my luck or it might get worse.

Roger said "notoriously buggy ", but I have had knock-down, drag-out brawls with MS as well. I would pick Logitech's website support over MS's (any day).

I would suggest before installing the new drivers, uninstall the old, then reboot, then install the new. I do this for any hardware change just to ensure any Registry settings are cleared.

Yeah, I have to agree. I don't believe Logitech drivers are any more (or less) "buggy" than any of the major players. Simple Google and Bing searches don't suggest otherwise either. Mouse (and keyboard) technologies are pretty low tech, and been around for years. I've used both MS and Logitech mice and keyboards for years and have not found any one brand more reliable than the another. It is my experience mouse problems (unless physically damaged) are usually the fault of the I/O interface (USB or PS/2) - meaning the motherboard.

That said, in Roger's defense, he said "software" an not "drivers" specifically. Again, I don't think Logitech is any better or worse than the other players, but I think the software used to customize and change the function of the various buttons and wheels from the expected defaults is often the problem, and not the actual pointer graphing/placement driver. So in that event, Roger's suggestion to let Windows find and use its native drivers is spot on.

OK, I've installed the new M$ combo, and everything works fine (I uninstalled the Logitech s/w and installed M$'s). I think the Logitech combo was too old, so the Win7 fix didn't work.
