Resolved [Black Screen and Windows fails to load]

Keeping getting the BSOD (that restarts everytime) right before I log into Windows XP sp3. I think it is video related as I can boot up in VGA Mode with no problem (SAFE MODE works as well). I have the .dmp mini dump file - can some one read it and understand it? I tried installing the video drivers, but nothing seems to work.

To find out what caused the problem you could try looking at the mini.dmp file with Nirsoft's blue screen view:

I am using Blue Screen to look at the dump but it is not listing a file. Just a bunch of parameters that I don't understand.

 

Doesn't it highlight any files in the lower window? An example is shown at the Nirsoft link I gave.

Quick update ..... it seems to be my ATI Drivers (are out whack). I uninstalled and re-installed several times .... I am getting a ATI Control Panel is not working correctly error now when I boot in VGA MODE (but I can still work) ....
Driver = RADEON x300 se 128MB hypermemory

I used Unknown Devide Identifier and am missing a Multimedia Video controllor that is called: Conexant iTVc16/cx23416 MPEG Codec .. i have googled it but cant seem to understand what it is or how to reinstall it.

 

First off .. thank you so much again .... I updated the BIOS and ran some dell tests. I also resinstalled the drivers off of your first link about (amd) .....
the bad news is that I can even boot in VGA mode anymore or any any mode really (not safe either). After pressing f8 I have all the boot options and not matter what I select it just hangs there with a black screen (display nothing) Could my graphics card be bad? I have run dell diagnostics and everything from the RAM to hard drive check out ... raid is running fine but I can even make it to Windows anymore? I have tried so much stuff I probably ******* something up more? Any suggestions?

 

no I ... select SAFE MODE and it is blinks for a second and I don't think it is even trying to load anything .... the screen is black, monitor power is one.. I have switch monitors - no luck ... just sits there. I can boot off of CD so I am thinking of trying to repair my of XP.

 

I am still running Dell Diagnostic checks (and everything is checking out fine). There is section for testing when you can boot to the OS ... and everything is testing fine.

Bare with me as I am software guy .... how do I get into the BIOS? You mean system setup?

I am not going to attempt a repair for awhile. I just figures with all the changes (driver, BIOS, etc) and the 16 re-boots that I might have ******* up an XP system file (which is why I want to try to repair).

 

Ok -- did some checking .. yes I can get into BIOS with no problem ... everything checks out .. hard drives and all ..... my raid controller also shows eveything is working properly - very weird.

As for as the repair .... I was going to break the mirror on my raid ... then repair then rebuild it.

 

Need to change this title to a complete black screen before loading windows.
Need serious help ..... I have run every dell diagnostic test I can .. it says everything checks out fine from the processor to the hard drive ....
I found a bunch of black screen from Microsoft and they lead to a reinstall of windows...

quick question .... I boot from an XP CD and went to recovery console and when I get the command prompt there is not version of windows to repair? What does mean?

 

MS might be right you might have to reinstall.

 

Does a "repair" .... the 2nd "R" allow me to not wipe out the data and apps on my machine?

 

Update .... de-coupled my RAID 1 ... both drives are fine and in tact with all data.
Ran Windows XP Recovery .... installed Windows fine ... booted up and finished the install
... after final reboot .. Windows logo came up (althought much smaller than normal) and the basically hung there saying "please wait" .... after 15 minutes rebooted again and made it to the Windows log in screen. ... logged in and it acted as if it was going to go to my desktop ... hard drive was working .. hung at stage right before displaying my desktop apps (also got a message the my version of windows is not activated - since I reinstalled) ..... rebooted again .. got into SAFE Mode no problem ... now what?
How can I figure out what is causing this problem? Checked device manager still only missing 1 driver some "Multimedia Video Controller ". Could this be back to my original problem - the video driver is going bad or gone bad? I tried so much stuff before (messing with the start-up, upgrade to BIOS, etc) I probably just fried a system file that caused the windows install ... now whatever is on machine is still there ....
The thing I installed (2 days before) was the latest XP security fix from Microsoft and RescueMe123 console (ws helping a client and needed to remote their machine). Problem is I can't uninstall apps in Safe Mode? Any suggestions are welcome.

UPDATE, UPDATE ... it is trying to activate my version of XP when it hangs (I used my MSDN XP key) .......... cant activate by phone with getting in there ... idea?
