Would I be contravening any copyright laws by buying a second hand Microsoft Operating System disk from somebody who has upgraded their PC and has no further use for the older Operating System disk? I would like to install a Windows XP System on a older PC for one of my grand children to help keep the cost down. I also hope I haven't breached any BBS rules by making this query as well.

IMHO Its ok if the disks are full version & not if its OEM or upgrade.

But I am NOT a lawyer.

If you read the EULA (End User Licence Agreement) - e.g. for XP Home under Section 13 Software Transfer it states .....
So my reading of that is that you may buy and use a secondhand copy of XP under the terms of the EULA provided that the conditions above are adhered to and providing that it is a Retail copy and not an upgrade.

    Peter,

Thank you very much for your help, it is much appreciated. You have allayed my fears of being booted of this board for an infraction.

    Cheers,

No chance of that - it was a legitimate question :) If only other folk had the same responsible attitude.

Please mark this thread as 'Resolved', see .....
