Resolved .NET update (KB961847) fails every time

My wife's laptop is a rather old but trusted Pentium 1GHz, 1.2GB RAM machine with XP Pro SP3 that has been working flawlessly for years.

A couple of months ago, she started having a problem where a particular update would not install (Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5). The error codes were 0x8007064c and 0x80070643. This also holds up other updates.

I have spent a day and a half investigating the problem and found loads of tips on the web, tried all of them but I am no further. What I have tried:

I uninstalled .NET 3.5 and reinstalled it. No joy. In the process, I had good help from http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2006/01/08/510677.aspx, which helped when at first I could not even uninstall .NET 3.5 as the uninstaller was hanging at "registering System.EnterpriseServices.dll ".
I uninstalled all versions of .NET on the machine (1.0, 1.1, 2.0 and 3.5) using the .NET Framework cleanup tool and reinstalled them one by one including their service packs. Along the way, these links were very helpful:

The .NET Framework Setup Verification Utility indicates that all versions are successfully reinstalled.

I have also tried restarting WU and re-registering its components as outlined in http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistawu/thread/f37c3096-321a-41e4-92cf-eaa08570fe3b.

When now running Windows Update, I get error code 0x80240022B. The last few pages of the log is below. Any help would be most welcome, I am at the end of my tether!

Perhaps my Installer cache is faulty?

I think I may have an idea of what is wrong. In the verbose log text from this morning, the installer seems to have looked for pre-existing .msi or .msp packages in C:\WINDOWS\Installer but not been able to find them.

An MSDN blog post suggests that you can fix this by extracting the right patch from downloaded hotfixes and renaming them as per what the installer is looking for. My question is: where should I extract the patches from? I don't want to just guess and scr*w things up even more.

In the example below, the installer looks for fe3e6.msi and fd52bf.msp. The blog post above seems to suggest that I should extract NDP35SP1-KB963707.msp from the hotfix, rename it fd52bf.msp and put it in the Installer directory. But this seems to me like tying oneself in a knot -- does the patch really need itself in order to patch?!?! And from where should I fetch the missing .msi file?

Somehow, my installer cache had got corrupted, or older patch files (*.msp) had been deleted from the %WinDir%\Installer directory. By turning on verbose logging as per Arie's post #2 above, I could then look at the log files from each installer package. I thought that the log was %WinDir%\WindowsUpdate.log, which is what I posted above, but what I should have been looking at is the *.txt files created by each discrete installer package in %Temp%. An extract:

This means that the installer tries to find fd52bf.msp in %WinDir%\Installer but fails. To prevent this from causing the installation to fail, I successfully did as follows:

By looking further down in the log file:

...I was able to see the hotfix from which the patch should be fetched. I downloaded the KB963707 hotfix from Microsoft Update Catalog, extracted NDP35SP1-KB963707.msp by running the hotfix .exe from the command line using the /extract switch and then renamed the extracted NDP35SP1-KB963707.msp file to %WinDir%\Installer\fd52bf.msp. Then I repeated this step for the other failing updates and let Windows Update do its job again.
