Has anyone ever heard of this?

I accidentally ordered a Sony slimline SATA optical drive for a BTX board that uses a 50 pin IDE connection.

50 pin IDE slimline optical drives are getting harder to come by (and expensive too). All I saw at Newegg was the SATA variety.

If I can't find an adapter, then maybe a PCI express x1 SATA card would work (provided the SATA connection on the Sony DVD was the same as the SATA card)?

Sorry, I don't know much about SATA connections.

Hi James Martin, anything is possible these days not always the best but possible.
You will have no problems with the power cable Molex to SATA are very common and can be had for just a couple of dollars.
SATA PCI cards are also available but then you will start having to install SATA drivers.
Now there are gadgets around for what you are looking for but I have never used one and have no idea how they work. You can have a look here.

    Thanks Hawk22,

I found an IDE slimline drive just recently...

I think I'll go ahead and RMA the SATA drive, and purchase the one above.

Concerning the SATA to Molex power cable...how would that work if the power supply had only one SATA connection available? The Dell Dimension 5100c is not very kind to expansion, it appears...

Hi James, you have a very good Power Supply and heaps in reserve with 450W.
This is actually a Laptop drive, I am surprised to see that this would fit your machine.
If you do not have the room in your case than you could always consider a external drive, more expensive though.
Looking at your Specifications I could see only one SATA connector.
Your new optical drive is to replace the CD or DVD that you have currently installed.
It is a very compact case and your options are limited. Having seen the setup that your machine offers I would agree on replacing with the same connection, it will save you probably some experimenting time.
In regards to Molex to SATA connectors you would have no problems at all.
In regards to the connectors SATA power and data both desktop and laptop have the same connectors as standard. Some manufacturers though use for convenience a just one cable setup.

What about SATA power cable to Molex? I'm referring to a Y....one SATA, and the other a Molex.

This machine's HD (new Seagate) temp tends to run around 52 to 53 degrees Celsius. It's within specified range, but a little on the upper end of the scale. At first, I thought the heat was coming from the HD itself, but the 128 mb graphics card is just below it, so that is where the excess heat is coming from. (The old HD [another Seagate] had the same temp problem.)

I removed the lower PCI slot cover to help with air venting, but I think a slot fan would work wonders here. The only problem is a lack of extra power connectors.

Got the 50 pin IDE slimline drive installed today. :)

Hi James, I have been using HD coolers for some 10 years now mostly the type that you mount under the HD, and it will keep your drive up to 10ºC cooler.
I also use the racks mounted in the 5/14" drive bay with the dual fans sucking air in from the front.
As I mentioned before you should have no problems in finding adapters, here is a place to have a look around in.

Glad you got your new drive OK.
