i have a client that was victim to arson in their home. machine is a dimension 4700 that has lots of smoke damage and was flooded by water from the fire department and its very obvious inside the box. client doesnt think any over exposure to the heat of the fire happened but the inside of the box is definitely black.

has anyone had this experience before and what are the chances that any hardware componets are still functional ??? not concerned about the burner, psu, etc more interested in knowing is system board, processor and memory might still be okay. machine right now is drying out but wanted some feed back before i plug the power in it.

    thanks.....greg

Since all fires aren't created equal - only time will tell if the machine is dead or not. You can always try to get the data off the drive....

i have the drive drying out also. hopefully because they are suppose to be secure no water got inside the drive.

from what the client tells me they believe only smoke and major water got to the inside of the box. guess i will let it throughly dry for a couple days before i power it up.

judging by the looks of the machine im sure i could just total it and be okay. even the adjustor that was there when i got there said he would just give the cost of a new machine and list the prices for individual components and submit the claim. component wise pretty expensive vs a new system.

the adjuster is basically telling me to just total the machine because they feel anything electrical even tho i can get the machine fixed might down the line cause a fire and they dont want to take that chance.

my question is what are the odds of a system board causing a fire ??? to me i think its probably impossible.

I guess under the right situations - mobo shorts...causes the power supply to do something stupid..and since its plugged into the wall.......

If they pay for a new machine - they own the old one;)
Or you can take a $$maller dollar amount and keep the machine.
