Trying to run SFC. XP keeps asking for SP3 CD - I downloaded SP3 as an .exe file some time ago. I just D/L it again as an .exe file - set it to install and caught it after it expanded everything and burned a copy of that. XP still won't see it.
Should I just reinstall SP3 or is there another way around this??

    TIA

Hi Ski52, the answer is to get your original Windows OS CD and locate and copy i386 to your Hard Drive Root system = C:\i386 Then when you run sfc /scannow it just flows OK.
You need to Start > Run > regedit > HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Setup Look for Sourcepath on Right hand side.
It probably has an entry pointing to your CD-ROM drive. Change that to:C:\
double click the Sourcepathsetting and a new box will appear allowing you to make the change. Cheers Neil.:D

Retiredlearner - I'll try that. Didn't think of trying to relocate the source file, wouldn't have known where to look in the registry....

Pete - You and Broni think along the same lines. Posted the same problem at his site, and got pretty much the same answer. Seems to be a long drawn out ordeal just to run SFC. Probably should have requested an SP3 CD from M$, like I got SP2. I'll give it a shot.

Last resort is to finally wipe and install an unused copy of Win7 that I have. I've been altering and modifying this current install of XP for a couple of years now.... Must be about time for a clean install of something.

    Thanx

Hi Ski52, I've just installed XP Home to a HDD out of my wife's comp. I then ran SP3 which I had Downloaded in ISO and burned to CD.
Then installed Avast and updated then had MS Auto Updates arrive (74) which all installed including IE8.
All flowed sweet as. No problems. I installed Open Office & Java and a few other things. Good Sunday project. Next job will be i386 setup for scf /scannow to operate smoothly. As Pete has Posted, it pays to slipstream as it saves Downloading MS updates. Cheers Neil.:D

Only the updates up to the release of SP3 will be included in the slipstreamed CD - those released after will not, so there will still be some updating to do :)

Saw where I can get a SP3 CD from M$ for 4.00. Rather than give M$ any more money, I will figure, with some help, a workaround.
