I have an ATX running windows XP SP2 and recently my PC had a motherboard problem so I purchased a replacement MSI KT6V, removed my old MSI K7T-266 and re-assembled the PC I thought that I had replaced the various sockets on all the correct pins and before I finished re-assembling, I powered up only to find that after 10-15 seconds it powered down by itself. It would re-start after a minute or so and then do the same again. The mobo came with scant information regarding set up so I expect that maybe a couple of sockets are misplaced. If anyone can provide any guidance, it would be appreciated. For the record, all 3 fans power initially up as do the hard drives

Google is your friend :) The full mobo manual is here .....

    http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=downloadfile&dno=3772&type=manual

    Also read this .....

How to replace the motherboard on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, or Windows 2000

You need to make a repair install of XP as the hardware has changed.

You also need to install the chpset, etc drivers for the new board ....

    http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_no=1&prod_no=567

You must also install SP3 - support for SP2 ended a week ago and you will not get Windows Updates unless you have SP3.

    MSI mobo

Thanks for your suggestion, very useful however I am still a bit in the dark about a number of unfamiliar terms as follows:

There are some unfamiliar descriptions in the user manual for the Front panel connectors .
    .
    JFP1 (LEDs, Switches)
Pin 1, HD_LED_P, Hard Disk LED pull up (what is a pull up?
    Does the “P” in "LED_P" indicate “+”?)
    .
Pin 2, FPPWR/SLP, MSG LED pull-up(what is a pull up? What's an SLP?)
    .
Pin 3, HD_LED_N, hard disk active LED (is this a “+” or “-“?
    Does the “N” in "LED_N "indicate “-“?)
    .
Pin 4, FPPWR/SLP, MSG LED pull up (what is a pull up?)
    .
Pin 5, RST_SW_N, Reset switch low reference pull down to ground (is this a “-“?)
    .
Pin 6, PWR_SW_P, Power switch high reference pull up (is this a “-“ or a “+”?)
    .
Pin 7, RST_SW_P, Reset switch high reference pull up (you get the picture)
    .
Pin 8, PWR_SW_N, Power switch low referenence pull down to ground
    .
    Pin 9, Reserved

Thanks for the heads up Bill :)

bg9208 - - it's a waste of our (voluntary) time and effort if 2 forums are working on your issue. Please decide which thread to pursue and abandon the other.

    new mptherboard problem

Sorry to appear to be "wasting your time ". I have a great deal of respect for WindowsBBS and always recommend you to any friends who have problems. It is only because I had no replies to my enquiry "internal error 2349" that I decided to ask Major Geek as well as WindowsBBS.
Having used WBBS for many years now, I was not aware that you would be so sensitive to me also asking someone else to comment on my problem. I note that someone does have time to search through and report on those who commit the misdemeanor of asking another help forum.
    Please consider this thread closed.

The problem with posting the same issue on 2 or more forums is that the members trying to help out on each forum have no idea what advice/guidance has been offered on the other forums and what you have done based on that advice.
a number of the members on WindowsBBS are also members or Moderators on other forums - it is inevitable that occasionally your other thread will be recognised. This can also occur when using Google when the same post on another forum is among the hits.

I can assure you that we do not have the time to search other forums for threads duplicated on WindowsBBS nor do we do so.

    Thread closed at your request..
