I have a very old computer I am working. It has XP. No post from motherboard. I am assuming it is a motherboard issue. I tested the CMOS battery-fine. Removed the ram and started the computer no beep indicating missing ram. So I thought it must be the motherboard. Just for the fun of it I reseated the CPU and the computer started right up. Shut down the computer and turned it back on and back to no startup...no beeps. So I am back to thinking it is a bad motherboard. I just think it is odd that I did get the computer to startup after reseating the CPU. Does anyone have any other thoughts.
    Thanks

When you say you reseated the CPU - did you renew the heat transfer tape/paste? Are fans working and LED's showing when you push the start button? Neil.

Yes I put new paste on. All the fans are working. Harddrive spins up. LED light on the motherboard works. Last night I put a different CPU in and same thing...the computer would work on the first turn on but when I turned it back off and on again it would not boot up.

Longish shot, but have you checked the capacitors for bulging or leaking?

When you boot up the second time - do all the lights and fans work? I would suspect the PSU as I had a bit of fun with one recently, changed the PSU and all was smooth again.
The fans sounded like a surging current flow until the comp had booted fully. Only a suggestion as electrics can be funny. Neil.

All lights come on. I did switch out the PSU. No difference.

Have you tried cable connections or replaced IDE cables? I don't know whether you're using SATA but cleaning cable connections or swapping them is about your last resort before condemning that M/B. Renewing/updating drivers is another thought. Neil.

I still have a sneaking suspicion on bad ram. Have you tested with different ram, take the ram out blow out the connectors and clean the ram modules the gold connectors with a eraser in an up and down motion (not sideway) and then give them a blow as well.

Can you get into the BIOS ? the lack of beeps mentioned in your first post may be significant - unless the connections to the case speaker are faulty/missing.

I tried replacing the ram. The only time I could get into the bios was the one time after reseating the CPU. I did hear beeps after reseating the CPU. But after a restart it would not beep or startup again. I have not done anything with the cables. I will give that a try.

The BIOS is looking suspicious - some BIOS's are plug in chips - if that is the case it might be worth reseating it - if you dare :)

OK I dared. I figured I couldnt do much more damage to this computer. Reseated the bios chip. No difference.

Removed the cables and ram from the motherboard. No beeps indicating missing ram.
