the dvd works fine, checked it out by watching movie. but put a cd in, and nothing a couple of green flashes and thats it.
question is,is this truly a hardware problem or could some kind of software correct it? and how do i fine out?

Most probably a hardware problem. Try using a CD lens cleaner, if it fails time to buy a new one.

how old is the drive, sometimes in instances like yours it is simply that the Laser that reads CD's can be out of alignment or just worn out.
have you tried a different Optical drive just to test if it is the drive or other problems. Optical drives are fairly cheap now to replace.
