I have just downloaded a small program 'MAD frontend.exe' but when I try to run it I get message - 'Component MSCOMCTL.OCX or one of it's dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid'.

Having Googled this message I then downloaded MSCOMCTL.OCX as a self extracting file and directed it to C\WINDOWS\system32 because I got the impression from the Google info this is what I needed to do.
I also gathered from the site on Google that I needed to follow the download by running REGSVR32 MSCOMCTL.OCX which I did, only to get the message 'LoadLibrary (MSCOMCTL.OCX) failed - the specified module could not be found'.
I then ran a search on this and the file showed up in the path 'C\Docs & Settings\owner\desktop\C\WINDOWS\system32'.
As I said, I actually directed the self extraction to C\WINDOWS\system32 so what is going on here ?.
Could somebody please suggest what I am doing wrong, or probably nearer the point, what I am NOT doing right. I desperately want to get the 'MAD frontend.exe' to work but am now completely stuck.

It looks like you ran the regsvr32 command in the Command line window instead of just in the "Run" box. Note that when the command line window opens, it defaults to the C:\documents and settings, etc. folder. If you want to run the regsvr32 command in this window, you'll need to change the directory to the location of the file first.

A much easier way with far less typing is not to open the command window; just type it into Run box and click OK (or press the enter key). It should work.

Thanks for reply Miz. I'm not too sure that I understand the difference between the Command line window you refer to and the Run box. What I did, which is not working, is - click 'Start', 'Run', and then type in REGSVR32 MSCOMCTL.OCX and then press O.K.
Is that what you are suggesting I should do ?.

Yes, that's what I was suggesting.

The results you were getting looked like you were typing "cmd" into the Run window, then clicking okay before running the regsvr32 command.

The second possibility is that the file you extracted didn't actually get into the System32 folder.

Easy enough to check and if it's not there, try extracting it again.

    Hi Lydeard,

I saw this zip file offered by your programs support site:
    http://members.home.nl/w.speek/flac.htm

At the bottom are links for files that may be needed for the app "Flac ". One of these is "mscomctrl.ocx ". When clicked on it will download a zipped file with the needed *.ocx and an install bat and uninstall bat plus a readme.

Once extracted the bat file will copy and register the file needed in the either system or system32 folder

This may make this whole process a bit easier.

    ---------------

    Hi Miz,

I know and have no doubt that you will or would have been successful in helping Lydeard with this but I saw this file offered and thought I'd pass along the link.

Thanks folks but please bear with me. Started to follow the route suggested by Goddez1 only to find I've lost the capability to open Zip files. Am working on it.

    Try this:
    http://windowsxp.mvps.org/zipfldr.htm

    ----------------
Or Use your mouse to copy the bolded line below for the association you wish to restore.

    assoc.zip=CompressedFolder

Then click Start, Run and enter CMD

A Command Prompt window will open.
Right click in this Window and select Paste.
    Then press Enter.

The above will restore the "default" association that XP shipped with. It will not restore the file association created by any 3rd party applications, you may have such as winzip, 7zip or winrar.

No problem, goddez1. I believe the more brains working on a problem, the better the chances a solution will be found...and usually faster!

    Hi Goddez
Many, many thanks, it's all sorted. I soon got the XP Zip file issue sorted by following your instructions and then the MSCOMCTL.OCX downloaded and extracted without any problems. This, in turn, allowed me to open the FLAC frontend so all is now tickety-boo, HOORAH !.
Thank you so much and also you too MIZ.
