Hi, I have a quick question about security software for home personal use. I have always had mcafee for the last 5 years and have always been underwhelmed by their performance. One of my tech savory friends has referred me to Kaspersky. After doing some research and reading customer reviews, I have heard nothing but good things. My questions is this, I am about to make a purchase soon and wanted to know which package I should get:

    Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010

    or

    Kaspersky Internet Security 2010

I will be using this on 2 laptops and 1 desktop.

Thank you in advance, always great help and information here.

There is no need to spend at all on security software - there are several freeware versions available which are as good as some of the big names .....

    Antivirus ....

    Avast
    Microsoft Security Essentials
    Avira
    AVG

    Firewall .....

    Comodo

If you want to buy a security suite I have no hesitation in recommending Sunbelt Vipre (Av, firewall & antimalware) which I use on my main computer - connected ~15 hours/day without issue.

For my Windows XP Mode on Windows 7, my laptop (W7), netbook (W7), second desktop (XP) I use either Avast or MSE

All good choices Pete, but I would add Zone Alarm to the firewall list.

A personal thing Grump but I would actively try to discourage any friend of mine from using Zone Alarm. After using it for a couple of years, (I don't give up easily!) and having to use their forums for all the problems I had, I chucked it.

I agree with Roger re. Zone Alarm - occasionally in the past their updates have wreaked havoc with systems which is good enough reason for me to avoid it when there are viable alternatives :)

On Vista or Win 7 there is no need to use 3rd party firewall. The built in firewall is fine & does a good job of keeping your computer safe. In fact 3rd party firewall can interfere with LAN connection & play havoc with file & printer sharing.

At home my wife and I have Norton Internet Security Suite 2010 and at work Kaspersky. Both have done a fine job in protecting us without any real impact in terms of slowing down the computers. I also like some of the options provided by Norton (i.e. password manager).

    Hello forum,
Know this is an old thread but just to add my tuppence ...

Agree also. :) Used Zonealarm for a number of years and then for it to go belly up with W7 64bit.
Now comodo is my choice of firewall. It is compatible with Windows7 32bit and 64bit, XP, and Vista.

Yesterday I finally decided to uninstall the McAfee AV I get with my ISP (British Telecom/NetProtect Plus). I don't think McAfee deserves the vitriol it normally gets, but like the OP I was consistently underwhelmed by it & it was often slowing my laptop down to a crawl. I downloaded Panda Cloud Free & it seemed very good & was incredibly light. Unfortunately after a full scan it found three imaginary viruses!

Later that day I downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials, I think MSE is going to be a keeper. It's pretty light, easy to use, FREEWARE & so far, no false-positives. :)
