When I try to use Windows Explorer and when I attach any file to my emails (OE), it takes so long to get to the next level in the menu that I can take a lunch break before the next click of the mouse to get to the next level. I've already loaded the "hot fix" for Microsoft's "slow look up" problem as directed by my Tech guy...but it didn't help.
    Any ideas?

Sorry but not really sure what you mean.

Windows Explorer AND attaching a file to an OE post are both slow? Or highlighting a file and doing a "send to ~ mail recipient "?
    Or something else altogether?

    and

"... it takes so long to get to the next level in the menu ... " ?

In windows explorer, I can't get to the next level. (Sometimes takes 20 minutes or so.) Also, when I'm attaching a file to an email it takes quite a while as well though not as long as explorer. My tech guy can't figure it out as he says it works fine in DOS (I don't know what that is supposed to mean except, hey babe, I don't know what to do.)

I think you probably translated what the techie was saying pretty well.

I'm assuming here that I understood what you were saying also and that the following describes your situation - if not, post back.

    - In Windows Explorer, when you are in a folder and try to open a sub-folder, it takes a long while.

    - The files/folders in question are on your local PC rather than on a network share somewhere.

    And now a few questions/suggestions:

    - are you running SP3? If not, could you?

    - do you have indexing turned off? If not, try it.

    - how much physical memory (RAM) does the PC have?

    - how large is the pagefile (virtual memory)?

    - what file system - NTFS or FAT32?

    - how much spare room on your drive(s)?

    - what version and SP of IE/OE? And have you run a repair on IE?

    - have you tried a drive cleanup? Defrag?

    - recent virus scan of the whole system using current (last day or two) def files?

    - followed that up with a scan by one of the free on-line scanners (see Here for links to some good ones).

As you can probably guess, I'm suggesting a fishing expedation since this isn't a case where I can figure out an "Ah ha - your problem is _____" solution. But there has to be a cause and it has to be findable and almost certainly fixable.

I only have the problem when accessing files on the LAN. My memory seems to be okay, I defrag often (as I thought that might be the problem also), I have some heavy duty protection on this computer (and the network).
Please let me know if this makes a difference in your response. I will check indexing. (I know nothing of that)

    Files on the LAN

Well, that is a whole other thing and you can ignore most of my other questions. This practically has to be a networking issue if you aren't seeing the problem with local files and are with files on a network share somewhere. My best guess, if that is the case, is that your PC itself is fine.

It's getting late and I'm getting tired so will put troubleshooting suggestions on here tomorrow sometime. Meanwhile, moving this thread to the networking section where I think you will get more ideas.
