    Hi all,

    After installing Partition Magic 8 on my XP Prof system, XP freezes immediately after starting PM.

    I tried PM version 7 but the same error occured.

    Any clue what to do?

    My system is: dual-boot Win 98SE / Win XP Prof, Athlon XP 1800+, 512 MB DDR RAM, 100 GB HDD, 3 partitions with FAT 32.

    Except the problem described above the system runs stable, fast, and without any problems.

    Check your event logs. There may be entries there that will tell you what is going on - or at least give a starting place for finding out.

    Hello

    Partitiom Magic is almost dangereous if you work with in Windows; it must be run only in real DOS mode, as described below:
    Install on diskette the PMagic boot disk,create a folder at C:\ and rename it to PM; copy to this folder the content of PM diskette, restart your PC, boot into Win98SE, keep pressing Ctrl key until Startup Menu will pop; select "Command prompt only" and type:

    C:\>cd PM

    C:\PM>Pqmagic

    This way PM will load faster than PM boot disk.
    Please take a look at this page.

    best5 has it right.

    Don't install PM. Only run it from the boot disks or the way best5 described - which is a good idea that I will be trying :D

    Hello

    Thanks Hex92
    Hex92 reminds me that PMagic creates 2 diskettes
    but you need to copy to C:\PM only the following
    files:

    Directory of C:\PM5

    Name------------------------------- Size[bytes]
    ====================================
    from PMagic

    AUTOEXEC.BAT-----------------------76
    CONFIG.SYS-------------------------54
    PQ_DEBUG.TXT-------------------130,378
    PQDATA.002--------------------------16
    PQMAGIC.EXE----------------------34,320
    PQMAGIC.OVL-------------------1,076,806
    PQTMP.FIL-----------------------------0
    PQPB.RTC----------------------------233
    MOUSE.COM--------------------------3,413
    MSDOS.SYS-------------------------------0 (empty)

    Copy from C:\
    IO.SYS----------------------------222,390
    COMMAND.COM------------------------93,890
    =======================================
    AUTOEXEC.BAT should be like this:

    @ECHO OFF
    PROMPT $P$G

    REM Put Network or CD-ROM drivers here.

    PQMAGIC

    CONFIG.SYS should be like this:

    LASTDRIVE=Z
    REM Put Network or CD-ROM Drivers here.

    god luck

    Great!

    Guy's! Thanks. That idea is really good and it's safe. It does seem problematic with large HD's over that 132gig limit. But I can't have a solution regardless.

    A 180gig drive, if I attempt to partition loses 40 gig that I can't seem to uncover. Using as is (a WD spEd) w the full 180gig as a single or non partitioned drive works. Windows see's and uses 170+gig! Go figure.

    XP (pro) can't format or configure (for me) that size HD yet the WD ver10 dos proggy can and does. For that basic task that program is good, but partitioning was like being in XP, pathetic with real large drives. If I didn't get a $100 rebate on the 180gig than I'd rather of had 2 120's or 80's.

    Anyway, if anyone has the slightest clue how to partition a 180gig without losingnear 70gb let me know.
    * PM ver8 can't do it at all. (Have about 30gb of data storage on
    it.)

    Tried Casper XP, it supports up to 2Tb's, yet a disk formatted to it's capacity won't work cause of OS limitations. I just don't get it.

    Blah, blah, blah! All I really wanted to do was say thanks for the great input on this subject.

    Having used PM7 and 8 from Windows several times without a hitch (I actually like 7 better and 8 just has minor changes), I don't understand the problem you are having.

    Are you formatting in FAT32 or NTFS?

    In any case, you might try XP's partition function on the CD. Boot from the CD, follow the normal installation routine until you get to the license agreement. Press F8 to accept. XP will then look for previous versions of Windows and show you your present drives and partitions. Partition and format your new drive as you like (use NTFS for drives over 32 gig---FAT32 is much slower on drives that large, and in any case, MS won't let you use FAT32 on drives that large for that reason, though you can partition a drive that large from DOS boot disks), and then exit the setup routine.

    Just an afterthought---if you have altered your service configuration in any way, return it to default. Pay special attention to the Logical Disk Management, Shell Hardware Detection, and PnP services which should be set to automatic, anyway.

    PM6, PM7, PM8,... You name it. My wdm's and configs are at their basic/default. It was more problematic with ver 7. It will partition or do it's chores in dos mode, (always get logging error message, so no log but the work is done. Strange how it continues looping unless we cancel a process... If it only happened to me I'd really be busting a bubble but we all deal with it.

    Your right about that 32gb limit when windows does the work other than them I can get the 132gb formatted in windows as long as the program doesn't use the same resource as the OS uses (I think!?" "?!).

    Also used this "INF" file I got off the MS site:

    [version]
    signature= "$CHICAGO$ "
    SetupClass=BASE

    [DefaultInstall]
    AddReg=48bitlba.Add.Reg

    [48bitlba.Add.Reg]
    HKLM, "System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Atapi\Parameters ", "EnableBigLba ",0x10001,1
    ===========================================

    My C:\ is NTFS, D:\ and the 180gb (E:\) are still fat32. E:\ is mainly program storage, Images of C:\, things like that. D:\ holds most programs that do not function as an extension of the OS and games to.
