I read about a program that will let you edit the registry from the cmd line. I think it was here. Son was trying to clean out a suspected trojan, and moved csrss.exe to his desktop, borking his windows. If he can get to cmd line, he could move it back. Hope this makes sense.

Moving the file wouldn't have anything to do with the registry. You shoould be able to sue the copy command for a command promt.

When he hits F8 for boot options, safe mode w/cmd line will not work. I know the file has nothing to do with registry, but my thought was it would get him to the cmd line

Best option may be a Repair install - retail disk required of the same Service Pack level as the installed OS - which OS?

If the installation CD is retail, not OEM, and is at a lower Service Pack level than the installed OS it is necessary to slipstream the appropriate Service Packs into the install disk ....

Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Create Bootable CD

Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 3 and Create Bootable CD

If both SP2 and SP3 need to be slipstreamed there is no need to burn the CD after slipstreaming with SP2 - just repeat the operation with SP3 and then burn the disk.

With the disk prepared make a Repair install of XP.

No CD, Dell computer, so I had him pull the HDD and put it in another XP machine. Copy and paste needed files and all is well. Thanks.
