If you have 2.4GHz dual core,is it two cores running at 1.2GHz or is it equivalent of 4.8GHz?

    What does it mean??

then how does it affects the speed? I mean if one core of 2.4 GHz is replaced by two cores and that too of same clock speed i.e 2.4GHz.

How the 2 cores function then?

One core can be doing one task while the other is doing a different task.

One core system - there is a bit of a delay before is came work on the second request.

If the software being used has been written to take advantage of multi-core processors both cores can be employed on the same process, thus speeding it up. Very noticeable when using Photoshop on a four core Phenom 2.

Think of a single core as a multi lane highway with just one toll booth and one toll booth operator.

Think of multi core as a multi lane highway with multiple toll booths and multiple toll booth operators.

All cars will pass through just one toll booth unless they have "special tags ", and if so, they can use another booth while the line backs up at the main booth.

The cars = the data & the "special tags" relates to software that is coded to take advantage of multiple core processors.
