I am running Windows 7 32bit on my desktop, it is the upgrade version. I replaced my outdated mobo along with the processsor and memory, I figured i could boot up and install the new drivers, yeah right, I get the microsoft logo for a couple seconds followed by a flash of the BSOD and a reboot every time, is there a way I can get thru this without having to do reinstall, thanks.

thanks, I cannot get the dvd to boot, my issue is that my copy of windows 7 was thru my school as a download via digital river download manager, as show in the pic you run the win-p-retail-en-us-x86 file and the OS installs as an upgrade.

I think that you are stuffed unless you can borrow a MS DVD from somebody! If you can't, you won't be able to enter the repair routine.

It seems that you will have to do a full install.

RC is not going to be able to repair shipping version of Win 7. You need to borrow a copy from a friend & the do a repair install. Hopefully, you would not have to do full install.

    ???

I was faced with the same issue with one machine and I wondered about the LEGALITY of the matter, so I called up MS.

They told me that in the case of a Windows (XP at the time) license bundled with an OEM PC, as opposed to an unrestricted, indepentently purchased license, (~=ultimate maybe?) , the license was tied to THE MOBO, hence new mobo = new PC = new license - and $$$.

I neither blinked nor sought a second opinion. Just scratched WinXP and installed Linux.

Was there any truth to the MS assertion?

That is correct, but when you make a repair install you use your CD key, not the one on the borrowed CD/DVD.

An OEM CD/DVD may not work depending on it's source. Only the large OEM's - Dell, HP, .... would use an OEM specific to their hardware. Smaller builders would use a standard OEM, not tied to specific hardware.

Basically an OEM copy is cheaper than retail because the computer builder is responsible for OS support, not MS.

The above is my opinion/understanding and should not be taken as gospel :)

this states "You can only do a repair install from within Windows 7, you cannot do a repair install at boot or in Safe Mode "
that was the issue, I cannot get into my account.

    I didn't re-read the thread :(

I think you will have to make a clean install as indicated by others here.

If you have data you require on the drive you could connect it to another computer and copy it off first.

If that is not possible make a clean install on a new drive and put the old one in as secondary which should give you access to the data.
