Yesterday was the first time I tried using the Hp officejet 5610 scanning software on this computer along with Windows 7 (64 bit). I used the software on my old computer with Windows XP with no problems. I downloaded and installed the appropriate software for my operating system. The problems I have is that for some reason scanned images get all of these marks added to them with this scanner. I use the correct picture option to remove them, but none of my edits will stay as it just reverts back to the original. I have 2 different questions. Why does this scanner add all these marks and what not to a pic, and why are my edits not staying? I cleaned the scanner glass with a lint-free cloth and that didn't seem to help. As far as the edits no staying, I never had that issue before. I spent hours in photoshop editing out all of the marks the scanner added to the pics I scanned. It shouldn't be adding marks in the first place, but if it does than the correct picture edits should stay. I don't know what the problem is.

Hi and welcome to the WindowsBBS community.

Check if the marks are always in the same place. Is there dust on the inside of the glass? If there is dust on the inside of the glass, you might be able to repel them off the surface by using an oppositely charged "wipe ". (Do you remember Electrostatics from school days?) I have had success using a brush with synthetic bristles. You will get opposite charges from wool and nylon (+ve or -ve).

Is the scanning resolution now a lot higher and you can see all the dust and defects? Try reducing the scanning resolution.

The only reason why your changes don't stick I can think of, is that you are not "applying" or saving the changes. Are the files being saved with a different file extension (for example, .jpg rather than .bmp)? Do you save the files to a different location, then when you open a file it is still the original?

Well I cleaned the inside with a simple glass and lens cleaner, and wiped it was lint-free microbfiber cloth. That didn't seem to help. When I go to the correct picture section and check on remove dust & scratches it will remove mostly all of them for a few seconds and then they re-appear. So there's no way to apply it because it never takes effect. It's very frustrating.

When you say "the inside" do you mean you dismantled it? I am saying that there could be dust on the underside of the glass (inside, where the light/photo scanning mechanisms are).

I have had a look at the printer's webpage, have you been there?

There is a link in red there
Scanned Files Disappear after Scanning with HP Solution Center.
It doesn't sound exactly like your problem, but VERY close and could tell us that they have a problem(s) with their Windows 7 drivers. If the update didn't work, I would be very tempted to completely uninstall the drivers and other software (I really dislike their software ) and install it again afresh.

Do you have User Account Control enabled? It should be, some installations work on that it is enabled.

Read in the manual about uninstalling the program/drivers. The last HP I worked on had a "complete uninstaller" on the CD. Use that if you can and maybe find an updated installer (drivers) on their website and use that.

Have you done any testing? It looks like you can either use the scanner as a flatbed or put the paper through the feeder. Have you tried both? You can scan without using the HP software, read about it in their FAQs. Try any workarounds like those to test if you can make it work correctly.

Check through the FAQs. Put some terms into their knowledgebase search. they have a lot of information in their knowledgebase that you can't find from the links on the webpage.

Check in their forums and by all means ask your question there if you can't see a probable solution.

Finally, go through their "Contact Us" links. Send/post them an email about it. The techs that look after that side of it seem to be a lot more switched on and can access more resources than the ones you speak to on the phone that just go through their checklist of tests.

Let me know if you want help in any of those areas.

    [Best of luck!]
    Matt
