    In Startup and Recovery settings:

Time to display list of operating systems 30sec
Time to display recovery options when needed is unchecked.
    Shouldn't it be checked?

I'm trying to test an Acronis bootable rescue DVD and when I put it in the DVD drive and reboot, it just boots into windows. Is it in the recovery options that I can get the computer to boot from a DVD? Or is it F5 or F8 or whatever the magic F number is?

All the XP computers I've had show you a screen at boot up with information about the boot process, not on this Win 7 one. Maybe it happens in the blink of an eye? Is it possible that it happens so fast I don't see it, or is there a setting I need to adjust to see it?

Regardless of the OS the boot order is set in the BIOS and should be .....

DVD/CD-Rom drive > Floppy if fitted > Hard drive.

Unless the DVD/CD-Rom drive is first in the pecking order and above the hard drive the computer will never boot from the DVD/CD.
is Windows specific covering Windows 7 recovery options only, not third party options. It would include, I imagine, the option to recover using an disk image made using Windows 7 built in disk imaging applet. Checking it would not be a bad move, but it will not include Acronis as an option.

You don't/can't....Booting off a cd is a lot different then off the hard drive etc.

Sorry, how do I get it to show me the boot screen when I boot my pc normally?

Assuming the bios is set to boot from DVD drive first, is it F5 or F8 or something similar to get a choice about what to boot from C\ or DVD etc?
Or should it just do so with the disk in DVD drive and a boot up?

You can't as Steve posted - Windows recovery options are run from the hard drive - third party recovery options are run from a boot DVD/CD

If you need to use the latter, e.g. your Acrosis Rescue CD, place it in the optical drive and reboot.
NO - given that the BIOS boot order is set to CD/DVD > hard drive when the computer is booted up it will look first for a bootable CD/DVD and, if one is not present, will proceed to the hard drive and boot from that.

I checked the BIOS. Can you believe it, they set this system up to boot from
hard disk first. So I changed it to cd/dvd first and hard disk second.

Now when I boot up with Acronis rescue media in CD/DVD drive it boots up from the CD-R with the rescue media on it.

    Thanks
