I have two computers using Windows 7. They keep waking from sleep with no encouragement and often do not revert to sleep even though the power settings are set to do so after a lapse of time.

Never had this issue with previous versions of Windows.

    Any solutions?

Do you close your email app so it doesn't check for new mail?

No, nor the browser which updates itself but this was never an issue with earlier versions of Windows.

I can see why that might prevent it from going to sleep as per power settings but once asleep, I can't see why that would wake it.

I'd look at the power management settings for the Network card(s).

With regard to KISS, a sensitive mouse, especially an optical wireless mouse, if slightly repositioned, will affect the sleep mode. For example, my fan caused the sleep mode to wake.

I could try that except earlier versions of Windows had a check box on the mouse settings to wake the computer with the mouse. This option seems to have disappeared. Any idea where it is?

Ignore last question. Found it in the device manager. We will see if that has an impact.

Sorry for being dense, but how can an email client check mail if the machine's asleep? Can they set wake timers?

I have this problem - very rarely, though, and from hibernation rather than sleep, and I've put it down to vibration causing a mouse input.

I've disabled this but it makes no difference - at least on my machine. It still wakes up when I move the mouse.

Well, none of these suggestions has worked. I have now disabled hybrid sleep and enabled hibernate instead but this is not a satisfactory solution so if there are any more ideas out there, they would be most welcome.

Have a look here: Sleep and hibernation: frequently asked questions

I would make sure you have the most current BIOS and drivers installed.

To find out what event/device woke up your Windows from its sleep state, go to command prompt (type cmd on the Start menu Search box and press [Enter]), then type: powercfg -lastwake

This shows which devices are set to wake up your system: powercfg -devicequery wake_armed

That was useful, thanks. Now that I have found what the causes were (modem on desktop and wake timers on laptop) I have disabled them and we will see how it goes.

While the problem went away for a while, it is now back with a vengeance.

If I run powercfg -lastwake I get the following results:

    "Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7600]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

    "C:\Users\Mark>powercfg -lastwake
    Wake History Count - 1
    Wake History [0]
    Wake Source Count - 1
    Wake Source [0]
    Type: Device
    Instance Path: PCI\VEN_1106&DEV_337A&SUBSYS_337A1106&REV_00\3&2411e6fe&1&99
    Friendly Name:
Description: VIA Standard PCI to PCI Bridge
    Manufacturer: VIA

    C:\Users\Mark> "[/INDENT]

It appears to be one device but I can't figure out what. Advice please.

Check with ASUS and see if there are updated motherboard/chip set drivers and or a BIOS update for your board.

Check to see it WOL is in the default position on your MB. If not check the manual for the off pin setting.

As I had Windows & installed on a clean install within the last 6 months, I assume that all drivers are up to date.

    What is WOL?

Can anyone decipher what caused the last wake from the pasted results above?

Windows doesn't have drivers for your motherboard chipset, nor BIOS.

    WOL = Wake On Lan

Still unresolved. It now wakes up with the wake timers disabled.

Did you install the drivers? Did you update the BIOS?

Drivers are all up to date. Don't know how to update BIOS or Chipset.
