With 2 kids under 3, 4 cats and a dog - my HP (bought 2007) hasn't had the most gentle handling and is filthy...

A few weeks ago I started having screen flickering. Some days occasional and other days interfering. Then Tuesday night part of the monitor (maybe a dime size) near the start button went black. I felt the area and it was hot. I powered down and left it for the night. Next morning the full screen was back fine. Midday it was all gone.

Upon boot it flickers and you see image and then gone. It seems like it tries to power on the monitor at least once more during boot. External monitor works fine.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

As an external monitor works OK there is no problem with the laptop graphics - it looks like the screen has failed. Either the backlight or elements of the screen itself. The dime sized black area which you say felt hot suggests an electrical short in that area.

Thanks - actually a return user but original acct inactive. Was here in 2007 before kids.

Is the issue something that an ordinary person, such as myself, may be able to fix?

I will search for a manual later if time allows.

In that case - Welcome back :D

If you are reasonably dexterous, can think logically and follow instructions from a manual - yes.

Search for Service Manual for your particular model of HP.

"reasonably dexterous" - that may be stretching it.

I've already opened the machine to take a peek and will certainly give it a go with a little documentation. If I feel it's out of my ability any good suggestions as far as places to take it.

As you appear to be in the Eastern United States and I am in the UK - see my avatar :) I am hardly in a position to advise - apart from - your local computer repair shop.
