I'm trying to post my issues one at a time to help keep myself and others from getting confused (I'm very good at doing that).

My "Standby" (I mistakenly referred to it as "Sleep ") mode, is a problem, however my issue I'm having with Windows Updater is more serious, and I'd like to work on that one as well.

As mentioned in my previous post, my computer is on the 78 step recovery program after a bad virus. (funny joke) My updater keeps trying to update but fails. I'm a little more than worried about this one. My next step is to try to update in Safe Mode With Networking. If there are any other suggestions out there, I'm all ears!

I'm more than happy to include a screen shot of the error message, but don't see how to insert HTML, or simply insert picture in this forum.

    Thanks Everyone

Ok, since I can not post a screen shot, here's the error message I'm getting.

"Some Updates Could Not be Installed "

    And here's the list:
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP x86 (KB979909)
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB982168)
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 Security Update for Windows 2000 and Windows XP (KB979906)

In order to post any kind of picture, whether it be a screen shot or whatever, the picture must be hosted elsewhere, meaning it must reside on another server. Then you can post the url link to that picture here and this bulletin board software will go get that image and display it here in your post.

Here is a link to one of the image posting servers out there. I'm sure there are others too.

    Imagebucket.net

I am pretty sure that you can use photobucket to upload your shot and then post the URL here.

Thanks Scout...I've gotcha on that. Problem is, in Photobucket, if I attach a link, my entire account is visible to all; I can't make public one album, and lock all others. Ok..I'll come up with something if the need arises!

I can, but then my entire album is open to veiw, which I don't want. I just posted to Scout that you can't make 1 album public, and lock the rest.....as far as I know, anyway. I'm going to double check that now that it's come up.

The link I provided is not Photobucket, it is Imagebucket.

Now I have not researched either image hosting service so I do not know anything about their Terms of Service. I believe both of these services are free and maybe they don't want to provide "advanced" security.

I used to use Picturetrail and it did allow security but back then (4-5 years ago) it cost $20 a year.

First, the Microsoft .NET Framework family of software is optional software, not Critical software. It is essentially support software that some developers use in creating their products. If you install any of the such a developer's software that is based on one or more of the .NET Framework versions (1.1, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5) then you must install the corresponding supporting version of the .NET stuff for that software to work.

If you blindly let Windows Update to install whatever it wants then it will almost always, if not always, try to install all optional updates whether your need it at that time or not.

You might try to restart your PC then go to Windows Update web site (Start>Windows Update) using IE and select the Custom Button to display all available updates for your system.

Other ways to get to the update web page are:

Go to the Control Panel then double click on Automatic Updates. A smallish panel will come up that controls how and when you receive updates to windows. If you should decide at some time to pick and choose which and when to install updates it is this panel where you would make the change from Automatic to "Notify me but don't automatically download or install them. ".

Anyway, near the bottom of that panel is a line that says: "Install updates from the Windows Update Web Site. ". If you click on the bold underlined portion (Windows Update Web Site.) of that line then it should cause Internet Explorer to initiate and automatically go to the Windows Update web site.

Additionally, you could start up IE (you have to use IE for the Windows Update web site even if you have another browser as your default browser) then paste in this link: http://www.update.microsoft.com/wind....aspx?ln=en-us

The Custom button will bring up a list of High-priority updates (if there are any) followed by a list of Optional updates (if there are any) followed by Hardware (driver) updates (if there are any) for your PC OS.

On Optional updates I often will do them one at a time. You might try that approach

I know you posted imgagebucket. I've never thought of paying for image storage space. I have a paid subscription else where, and I'm just realizing now, that I haven't taken advantage of THEIR image storage. :p

Sounds like that may be the ticket; I'll follow your instructions, then report back. Thanks so much for taking the time to explain this! ;)

    For SCOUT:

I followed your steps, and now let me type in here what I got on the updater dialogue box:

A Security issue has been identified that could allow an attacker to tamper with digitally signed content without being detected, when this content is being comsumed by an application that makes use of the Microsoft.NET framework on a windows based system, You can help protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft.

Sorry, I had to type that all in; I couldn't copy/paste the info.....

    FOR SCOUT...

Sorry I'm being a pest, but I notice I do have those Microsoft.NET frames installed on my computer. Can I remove all those? I don't even know what they are...

    Thanks!

What they are, as I mentioned above, are support software written by Microsoft to somehow enhance (I am not a developer so I cannot be specific) software that individuals (not Microsoft employees) create for our consideration.

Here are a couple of links on the subject:

    Wikipedia

    Microsoft

You can try to remove them using the Add/Remove function in the Windows Control Panel. However, I once tried this on a buddy's computer and was not able to remove them all. The Add/Remove function would not let me remove one.

I suspect the one that I could not remove was because my buddy had installed some other software that depended upon that one. And I do not know of any easy way to discover what software was dependent upon that one.

I have read here on this BB where some folks do not allow Microsoft Update to install any of them.

Many of us do not allow Windows to automatically update anything for this kind of reason. We pick and choose what and when the updates are done. I always, always wait a few days after updates come out (the second Tuesday of every month) before I will install even the Critical updates. And some of the Optional stuff I never allow to be installed.

Thanks much for the links, and I wanted to tell you that my auto-updater has stopped coming up. I changed the settings as per your instructions, and it seems to be doing just fine.

I, too, have heard more than a few people saying they don't allow the updates at all. If I could, I'd go directly to Linux and forget all this Windows stuff.

I thank you for all your help! I suppose we can consider this problem resolved...for now...heh heh

Microsoft Updates KB 979906 KB979909 wont install
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP x86 (KB979909)
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB982168)
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 Security Update for Windows 2000 and Windows XP (KB979906)

    Pweb,
No matter how many methods I have tried, these two updates won’t install either. This is the first time I have had a problem with updates. I have Googled and discovered many others have the same problem. I haven’t read of any solutions. I did email Microsoft and they said -

"This issue can be caused by a damaged .NET Framework installation. In order to resolve the issue, we have to remove/reinstall previous versions of .NET Framework. Based on the current status of the issue,"

    Doug Scout 321x,
Thank you for posting information about Microsoft .NET Framework I was wondering what it was for. I guess I will just have to go to Add/Remove and remove these Net Frameworks. I noted that you couldn’t remove one from your friend’s computer, so if that happens to me, I’ll assume I have softeware on the computer that needs it.

These updates weren’t automatically installed by Microsoft; after I checked out what they were for, I started the install. Now, since they won’t install I have that pesty yellow shield on the Task Bar, it won’t go away and that means every time I log off I am asked if I want to install them.

I had thought I read Pweb’s problem with the updates had been solved, but I don’t think it has ??????

Perhaps the issue really wasn't resolved. I remember reading somewhere that I should delete the earlier versions of the NET.frameworks, as I do have a few on my computer. I got distracted while working on this, and forgot about it. I will list the files I have on my computer for you here.

    Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1
    Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2
    Microsoft.NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2
