    OS XP (Home Edition)
A small, but annoying problem has developed on my system. I've got the same problem reported by boatan2000, billprice, ephamarial and TheShrike in that when trying to use Disk Cleanup it gets to 3 marks whilst "compressing old files" and just hangs there indefinitely (CPU usage 99% during this process). I've tried the regedit option suggested by tomxp (credited to moskowa1) and it worked. Although an elegant solution (well done guys! - thanks very much), does this strike anyone else as being a bit shabby and lame! Does anyone know if Microsoft have developed a robust patch that obviates the need for juggling the registry components before you can use this piece of system software? If so where can I find it?

    Hi Newt,
Thanks for getting back to me.
In answer to your query no I hadn't but I've since rectified that situation and the problem is persisting. Any bright ideas?

    This isn't a patch.
This is a cut and paste from my notes.

    Disk Cleanup hangs
I had exactly the same problem and, with thanks to David
Candy (posting below), I was able to fix it by doing the
    following:

    1. Type Regedit in Start - Run
    2. Navigate to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersi
    on\Explorer\Volume Caches
    3. Open "Compress Old Files" folder
    4. Delete all files in this folder
    5. Reboot
    6. Run Disk Cleanup

It seems like enough people have reported this problem
that Microsoft should be aware of it and at least working
on - if not issuing - a fix. But narry a word on this
can be found in the so-called Knowledge Base.

I backed up the registry first. Some people have fixed this with a clean install. I recently clean installed and the problem wasn't there. Mine would start with the little window with the three bars never got any farther and had to go into Task Manager and end process.
