I was using Microsoft One Care to backup my computers to a network drive. Now that Microsoft has stopped support and upgrades for One Care I don't have a backup solution. I looked at Backup that comes with XP. But I never used it and it looks like it is hard to use.

Do you want to back up entire drives including the OS or just data?

Good question Pete, I have the programs but not the updates. The main things I want to save for sure are pictures, email, and MS Office data files. So I guess thinking about it the data is the most important.

For data I would suggest SyncbackSE which I use and have used for several years, to back up my data on either an hourly, daily and weekly basis to internal and external hard drives on an incremental basis. Some backups are sceduled and run automatically, others are initiated manually.

It's a first class piece of software - there is a free trial and I have a feeling that there may be a free version too, but am uncertain as to the scope of its capabilities.

Updates can be included if you have the update installation files saved to disk.

To backup the entire drive you have to make an image of it using something like Acronis True Image Home - which I also use. This needs to be kept current - my OS drive is imaged automatically on a scedule to another hard drive on an incremental basis weekly and those images are also backed up to external drives using SyncBack SE.

Depending on your harddive brand, I've noticed that Seagate / Maxtor, and Western Digital are providing Acronis True Image software for free if you own one their drives. I have it installed on my brother's Seagate drive, and the program comes with scheduled backup capabilities.

I have the Acronis WD version, but I haven't used the software just yet.

Well I do not want to create images of the drive. I just want to backup a couple of directories. I am trying EASEUS Todo but it only creates a complete image of the drive, not what I wanted.

I use Karen's Replicator which is freeware. You create "jobs" and it's possible to define specific folders to backup. It can be scheduled or run manually.

The program does have a "data only" backup feature, but after further investigation you have to purchase the full version from Acronis to use it.

There is another free program available called Winbackup 1.86...

    http://www.probz.com/index.php?autocom=downloads&showfile=55

It has the ability to make scheduled, or manual backups. The software used to be shareware, but it has been released to the public for free.
