I now get this err when I opena new IE 6 window.

This began when the machine froze this morning & I had to use power SW to restart the machine.
W2KPro IE6 all current service packs, N2002 installed & updated every day (not just Live update databse form the last week).

I was running a java app when the sytem froze. Now I get

IEXplorer.exe has generated err & will B closed by win. U need to restart the program. An error log is beign created.

No new errors in the App log since the erro that caused the freeze.

The description for Event ID ( 1000 ) in Source ( Microsoft Internet Explorer ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. The following information is part of the event: iexplore.exe, 6.0.2800.1106, unknown, 0.0.0.0, 068cbd78.

I have 2 apps which access the web to get data & they give the same messages & close the apps.

One of these apps opens an IE window & I can use that window to navigaet to other favorite sites, but get the err when I try to open yet another IE window from the systems try (or start menu).

When I use the window provided by the app & try to navigate to another site I get a security alert window.

Inforamtion you exchange with this site cannot be viewed or changed by others. Hpwever there is a problem with the site's security certificate.
The security cert is from a trusted certifying authority
The security cert ghas expired or is not yet valid
the security cert has a vlid name matching the name of the page you are trying to view.

    Do you want to proceed?

Choosing Y - takes me to the page....What do I do to fix this problem & might it be related to the other errors I'm experienceing.

Before the freeze I stopped & tirned off the Messenger service, but then turned it back on again.

I thought about running the repair tool for IE, but can't remember how to access it. I did re-install the IESETUP.exe that I'd downloaded from the MS site.

I check every day for viruses & don't think has anything to do with this.

Reflecting on the security alert I'm receiving, might the cookies & temp intenet pages have become damaged?

One more symptom......I had MSCONFIG in the pull down of the RUN box. Now I try that & get 'Cannot find the file 'msconfig' ...make sure..........

I have to specifically browse to the folder which contains the exec.

    Another new behavior.

Daizy....I'll try to uninstall Ad-aware & reinstall, per your recommendaiotn.

Might the security thing be ralted to erasing the cookies, & if so how do I do that?

pilotgal8 - You say this is IE6 on W2K so I'm moving this from the XP section to 2K.

The event log error you got
usually happens when you use your event viewer to look at another PC's event logs and there is an error generated by an app you don't have loaded. In this case and assuming you were looking from your own PC, my guess is that IE isn't loaded correctly. Something is busted. And the same thing that busted IE may have also caused you to have to look around for msconfig.exe.

I suggest the following - in this order:

    - Take a look at your environmental settings and make sure the entries (especially the path entries) are correct for both the system section and your user section.

    - From a DOS window, run chkdsk /f on your system drive and then reboot to let the app scan and fix any file/drive errors.

    - Reapply SP3.

    - Repair IE6.

If that doesn't get you fixed, post back.

And while I was searching, I found This Thread from September where you had asked a follow-up question and had been ignored. I missed it at the time. Do you still need the information?

    Thanks Newt.

    Thanks for moving the post.
No I don't need any help on the prior post, but thanks for asking.

Another piece of info, maybe unrelated but....to remind you, this started with turning off the message service, then the java app abended & I had to restart the machine. Then these errors began, then I restarted the message service. Don't htink this is realted but......

Your solution sounds great, but I know nothing about environment variables or what to check.

I will now logoff & run chkdsk & repair

    Don't know how to re-apply SP3 or repair IE6

In Add/Rem Pgms the WIN2K SP3 shows a Turbotax icon, not the folder icon, as the rest of the 2Khotfix entries. When I click on the entry it only allows remove, so I'm a liitle leery of doing this.

Also have NO entry for IE6 in +/_ pgms, so where is the repair IE6 repair tool hiding now?

    IT'S FIXED

The 'thing' that invaded my machine changed the system date to 15002 from 2002.

Setting the year back to 2002 resolved all these symptoms.

Thank you for all your help.
