Quick question, is it possible to set a default URL in a router?

We have a Linksys but will provide whichever manufacturer that can meet the need described below.

This is for a business and they want to have a simple public wireless network setup and need to have their website be the first page viewed by the public.

    Thanks everyone.

You cannot use a URL for a home router but you can use an IP address. The default IP address is 192.168.1.1 but you can change it to any private IP address.

You can use Port Forwarding on the router to map a URL to a private IP addres though. For example, if you have a parked domain you could domain forward to port 80 of your static public IP address and set the Linksys to forward port 80 requests to a local server or computer running the hotspot software.

For users to see your start page you will need to use hotspot software. Note, there are commercial access points that come pre-loaded with such software.

  3. to hide this advert.

When you say "Contract" I assume your proposing this for a business? A 49.00 linksys router has no business in a commercial environment IMO.

Hi Scott, the equipment was purchased by the motel manager at the recommendation of a previous tech support company, we are trying to help him gain control of an overly complicated arrangement by reducing unnecessary hardware. The thing is he does have a Splash page linking to the motel's website and I'm trying to work out how we can maintain this. All I've seen todate is a linksys setup as a gateway with 5 wireless routers patched through a hub. The website is hosted and the customer uses Century Link as an ISP. He is getting hit by the economy and wants to downsize and make things as maintenance free as possible.
    Thanks for helping out guys..
