Are Persistent *.txt files connected with cookies and can I delete them?
    Thanks

What exactly do you mean by 'Persistent txt files' and where are they located?

Cookies are in themselves .txt files and are confined to the Temp Internet and Cookie folders.

There were a lot of them in my docs&settings but when I was deleting some other foreign language text files I deleted the persistent files by mistake.
I'll wait until they re-appear and re-post this issue. I wonder if you have any such files on your computer; I searched them under 'persistent' and they certainly look as if they were of the cookies genre.
Sorry for my carelessness after posting this matter.
Should I mark this as resolved and wait to see if they re-appear?
    Thanks
    Peter

Let the thread ride until you have more detail to put forward - no such files on my computer, but OTOH I run 7.

OK thanks Pete, sorry for the c***-up!
By the way, I took this opportunity to test out the much vaunted 'Recuva' to try to recover these files using it's deep scan and succeeded after 2 hours in recovering absolutely nothing! It looks very pretty though.

Where exactly in Docs & Settings and what exact file names?
Be specific and give accurate details we can go with.

TonyT, as I said above, I deleted them by mistake and can't tell you where in docs&settings they were in.
As Pete says, I'll keep this thread open to see if they re-appear they I cant re-post on this.

Is this perhaps cookie-related? Before I mistakenly deleted the others while waiting for your advice, there were a great many of them.

Those are all favicons - downloaded from sites you have visited. Their purpose is to put a custom icon against URL's saved in your Favourites list rather than the default Opera(?) icon.

In IE these are stored in the Temp Internet files.

It's nothing to worry about Peter,

I don't use Opera but it looks like this is where opera stores an index to locations for favicons (in IE and FF those are the icons next to the address bar indicating which website you are viewing, I'd imagine Opera is similar).

If deleted the worst that will happen is a very slight slowdown whilst opera retrieves the icon again.

Be aware though that not everything inside the Application Data folder should be treated so willy nilly. It's best to leave that folder alone to be honest and let the applications handle their storage requirements themselves.

Ok thanks guys, and Paddy, that's the politest rap over the knuckles I've had for quite some time! (Does your reply translate as 'leave well alone you madman'?
    I'll mark this as 'solved'

I wouldn't go as far as "madman" but yes leave well alone :)
