In my 15+ year working with computers, I have yet to see a single case where upgrading BIOS has any effect on the computer speed. The BIOS role ends as soon as the system boots up & the command is passed on the bootloader in the OS. Thereafter, BIOS has very little role to play at least in the modern OS.

Upgrading BIOS is recommended only if you have a specific problem with hardware such as drives not being detected properly etc.

Since you have tried only Win 7 64 bit, I recommend that you download or get a copy of some Live Linux distro like Ubuntu, Knoppix etc., boot from it & then see if you are having the same problems.

Leave the BIOS alone as it appears the problem is resolved as far as that goes.

The bios upgrade was suggested by Dell to resolve an error on diagnosis - post #1, not to address the slowness :)

    Pete,
The computer is performing well but I do have a question. I want to disable the touchpad because I have a problem typing with it on. T am going to have to use this computer for a while, mine is being returned to Dell. I cannot find the touchpad under devices and under systems it says no Touchpad input available for this display. The touchpad works fine, I just prefer a mouse. Any ideas,
    Thanks.

Dee - if in doubt - Read the Manual :)

    Page 40 .....
I suspect these instructions refer to XP - in 7 Control Panel > Mouse.

    My Dear Mr Pete.

Thank you for your sage advice to read the manual as if I haven't researched this to the fullest.

The computer doesn't have touchpad on it as if hasn't been installed but the touchpad works. I know how to disable mine on my computer. Doesn't this seem strange?

    Dee:p

This may be the result of upgrading to 7 - Dell do not list any Windows 7 drivers for your model.

I know you have looked in Device Manager, but confirm that there no reference there to .....

Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad under Mice, etc.

And in Control Panel > Mouse > Mouse Properties there is no tab labelled Device Settings with the Synaptics red logo.

If both are missing I am lost :)

Consider taping a piece of thin card over the touchpad :D

    Pete,

Found the problem, the driver wasn't installed. I installed it all myself and it's working fine. I really feel good about that, I've come a long way with all of you guys help.
Thanks so much for your help,

    Dee
