The link I posted takes you to a previous thread on WindowsBBS started by hawk22 who had a problem similar to yours.

In posts #2,3 is a description of how to remove the Vobid device and (hopefully) restore the functionality of your burner.

I have no idea why you chose tio disable all 3 drives - the instruction in the thread I posted to remove the vobid drive is quite clear.

    Re-enable your 2 burners ....

    HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM-DVD GH22NP20

    PIONEER DVD-ROM DVD-115

    and test.

    Hi John,

I wonder if you have a clear understanding of what and why Pete has suggested you remove the virtual vobib drive, only.

Your original problem was bluescreens and problems while burning disks. Past posts have shown that Pinnacle software and the virtual rom drive that is created with such, is problematic for the proper function of other rom drives.

He has suggested that it may be worth using links to the how-to's and disabling this vobib virtual drive will restore normal function to other rom drives. In the least it help to figure out if pinnacle and virtual drive is root cause of your posted problem. Your blue screens may be due to compatibility issues between the 3 drives.

See, read and review some of the google topics on the subject:
    http://www.google.com/search?q=VOBI...s=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

    ------------------
    Opps, Dang it Pete,

I guess I took to long typing this. I thought I'd offer a bit of assistance. I was little to late and much to slow.

    John

With all due respect if you do not feel up to following the posted instructions you should get the help of a computer savvy friend to assist :) Based on your responses in this thread so far I hesitate to post full instructions as part of the fix is to edit the registry where one false step could render the computer unbootable.

However you may follow the instructions below at your own risk, bearing in mind that we cannot see the screens or their contents which you will see.

I suggest you print out these instructions

Step by step instructions ref the thread I posted earlier ....

Right click My Computer icon > Properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager.

In Device Manager look for a sub section SCSI and RAID controllers and expand it by clicking on the + sign

You should see vob drive and vob instant drive controller listed ....

If they are there right click on each in turn and select Uninstall.

If they are not present abort this mission and post back.

If you have not enabled the two other drives as I posted above do so now.

On the basis that they are present and you have uninstalled them proceed as follows ....

Start > Run . type in regedit > Enter

    The Registry Editor will open.

Highlight My Computer at the top of the lefthand column

    Then go File > Export

In the Export Registry window which opens type Registry Backup in the file Name box where the flashing cursor is placed.

Check that All is selected under Export Range below that box and click on Save. You now have a backup of the Registry.

Then press the F3 key and the Find dialogue box will open

Type in vobid and click on Find Next

The first reference to vobid will be highlighted

Right click on it and select Export

In the Export Registry File window name the file vobid_1 and click on Save - the file will be saved as a .reg file (Registration File) to the desktop.

Then right click on the highlighted entry again and select Delete.

Once the entry is deleted press F3 again for the next occurrence of vobid in the registry and repeat the steps above - export as vobid_2 and then delete.

Continue with this process, naming the exported entries sequentially - vobid_3, vobid_4 and so on.

If an entry will not delete do not be concerned.

When all the entries for vobid have been found and dealt with in the manner described above close the Registry Editor.

    Reboot the computer.

Your 2 optical drives should show in Windows Explorer - test.

I repeat - if you are not confident that you can follow these instructions seek the help of someone more computer savvy.

    Hi Pete, hi all.

I got to the Device Manager and under the Scsi and Raid controllers I found the vob instant drive controller but not the vob drive controller. I uninstalled it per your instruction.

I did get the registry backed up. BUT: The first instance of vobid; when I right clicked I only got the following options:

    Modify
    Modify binary data
    -----------
    Delete
    Rename

No export so I've come to a standstill for now. ( This comp is a mess. :) )

Where to now? Should I go back and try anything that has already been posted or no? I started here since this was the last instruction.

I'm on John's computer in case you didn't guess.

More than likely you are trying to export a value which is on the right side of screen.

You need to export the hkey which is on the left side. Looks like folders and subfolders.

Or just highlight value or hkey and use toolbar>file>export.

The exporting of these hkey and values will more than likely not be needed but are an additional restore pecaution should the need arise. I assume you had backed up the entire registry, as instructed, prior to doing any of this. That was restore option 1. A system restore point was option 2. Individual hkeys you are now exporting is option 3.

Three layers of precaution for a beginner, who was showing signs of interring the school of hard knocks, may be over kill but couldn't hurt.

Thanks for the clarification Goddez1. I exported then deleted all the vorbids I could and rebooted the comp. Since I'm just now joining this thread I'm kinda at a loss now. Is there anything else that needs to be done or do you think the deletion of the vorbits is enough? What should he/I try next?

    Thanks for the patience everyone.

    As Pete per Pete's instructions:

    >When all the entries for vobid have been found and dealt with in the manner described above close the Registry Editor.

    >Reboot the computer.
    >vobid virtual should be gone.
    >Your 2 optical drives should show in Windows Explorer or device manager - test them.

We're trying to eliminate original problem:
On reboot, error message comes up reporting that the system has recovered from a serious error. A dump file is made, as happens when bsod/errors occur. Advice and how-to's were given to make sure to adjust setting options so that the computer does not reboot on an error. Link was given to a tool that would help read the dump file and see if a clue or clarification was offered as to what caused the bluescreen reboot.

Dump pointed the finger at hal (hardware abstraction layer). Conclusion drawn was that poster had problem with hardware. Logic says most likely suspect was rom drives. Steps taken and in progress were to focus on getting rid of or eliminating a known issue with vobid virtual drive and existing rom drives.

You are now ready to test rom drives. Burn disc play file read/ explore disks etc etc.....put drives through the paces to see if all is well with functions.

Hopeful results: No bluescreen, noreboot, no error...........Problem is fixed and everyone is a happy camper. :)

Wow, an excellent summary of the problem and what has been done and what needs to be done. 3 kudos to you. :)

I was able to use PeteC's instructions since John printed them out. Good step by step instructions Pete. Easy to follow and easy to do. Except for the part where I got my right and left backwards in the registry.

Ok, I'll tell him to put the drives through the ringer, which will be easy for him, and see whats what. Thanks again for all your patience through this. I feel pretty sastified that things will be ok now. I'll have him resolve this thread in a couple of days if he has no more problems. Thanks again.

DugE - thanks for helping out on this :)

Having reviewed my instructions and your response I was not entirely clear :(

The right click > Export option is in the left hand column. Not having this vobid device on my XP box I was guessing so to speak as to exacrly where the reference to vobid would appear.

Goddez1 provided the clarification - thanks Ann :)

The last stage of the instructions stated ......
Have you rebooted? Are the drives present in Windows Explorer? Do they function - read/write?

Hi Pete. Yeah I did everything you instructed. I exported and deleted all the vorbid entries that came up, well deleted what would delete. Then closed out of the registry editor and rebooted. Checked that the two proper drives showed up in Device manager but I forgot to test them or anything. I just told John to go ahead and do what he was doing and see if he had any more problems. I told him if he did to let me know before he posted here about it. :)

One more thing; what do I do with the vorbid entries that I exported?

Apologies if my post seemed out of order - I failed to notice page 3 :)

If the burners now work - we need confirmation of that as summarized by Goddez1 - the vobid exports can be deleted. They were a further safety net as Ann explained earlier.
