I do have a PCMIA port. Do I need to take my laptop to the store to test if buying a PCMIA USB 2.0 card will work, or just buy it and trust my luck?

In theory the card is the same as a plugin USB 2 card for a desktop and has the controller on the card. I use one in my laptop to give me 2 more USB ports.

These things are usually in sealed packages, but you may find the store - especially if they do repairs, may have one to try.

jharry, before you rush out and buy that card, just one more thing to try:
    Regedit > HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\USBSTOR start value is 3.
    Have a look in C:\windows\system32\drivers
If you don't have usbstor.inf shown, this may be your problem. You will need to get the XP CD and locate and copy to your system.
I found this with some research and it appears to have helped many others fix their problem. It will eliminate any doubt before buying the card. Cheers Neil.

There is a usbstor.sys, but no usbstor.inf. All the files in the drivers folder are either .sys or .dll files. Are the .inf files in some other place?

Yes -C:\Windows\inf as I recall. It is a hidden/system folder so you will need to go to Tools > Folder Options View and check 'Show hidden files and folders' and uncheck 'Hide protected operating system files'

Thanks Pete, I've been busy and was unable to reply earlier.
Jharry, My apologies for slow reply. Double click My Computer on Desktop > Local Disk (C:\) > scroll down to +Windows > scroll down to +inf > click on inf > scroll down to find if you have usbstor.inf. If it's not there - then you can locate on XP CD in i386 and copy and paste the file into C:\windows\system32\drivers.
Did you locate USBSTOR with a start value of 3 as in my earlier Post? Neil.

I see a smiley has appeared - should be C:

I checked HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\USBSTOR, it has a start value 3. There is a usbstor.inf in C:\Windows\inf. The start value is 3. Do I need to copy it to C:\Windows\system32\drivers? I checked a friend's desktop that does not have my USB problem. It's usbstor.inf lives in C:\Windows\inf but not in C:\Windows\system32\drivers.

No - it belongs in the C:\Windows|inf folder.

Jharry, Pete is the Expert in this area. I have researched and compared the advice in my comps before Posting here for you to follow.
I checked to make sure I had the usbstor.inf listed in my comps and from all info I have gleaned, it is necessary to have that file along with (Enhanced) to ensure USB2 will work.
#3 will enable USB devices to work when plugged in, other digits will do further controlling in required environments. Cheers Neil.
    Thanks Pete for your corrections.

There is only one other suggestion I can put forward ....

Right click on usbstor.inf and select install.

If that has no effect I have to stick with the strong possibility that the USB2 controller itself is faulty.

I tried your suggestion. Installing usbstor.inf did not solve the problem. I will go and buy a PCMCIA card and see if it works.

I think that's the only remaining option.
