The problem may not be the mouse. Do a ctrl-alt-delete to determine if there is any consistency when the mouse freezes. Also you may want to close all programs before rebooting.

Uninstall any special moseware you might have been tempted to install when you got that one eyed optical wonder. Reboot into safe mode and go to your control panel, device manager and remove all the mice you find nesting in there. Reboot normally and let Windows put your mouse back where it belongs - you're welcome.

    ;)

    Hi Guys,
Well as you can see I'm back and using an el-cheapo mouse that I bought at the local market. And it's NOT a microsoft one, optical, I plugged it in and away it went.
XP didn't even notice it was a different one so haven't even installed the software yet.I don't know whether to or not,it's working so what do you think?Leave it be or instal the software?
Thanks again for all your advice, must have got a faulty mouse from microsoft, how surprising! lol;)

OTOH. Or the flip side of the coin.

I run 98 SE and have two optical scrollwheel ( corded ) mice on here.

A USB 5 button MS Intellipoint ( which replaced a Logitech PS2 Trackball ) using its' software.

Also a 3 button PS2 Logitech using Widnows default drivers.

All live and work together very peacefully.

We use both ( Wife and I ) when playing Golf on the Internet with a Friend in Canada.

I also use PS2 when working in DOS.

But from experience I will agree that sometimes Mr. El Cheapo does work better than a Mr More Expensive.
