    Howdy All,

My new pc has W7 installed and I am trying to use my old HP 6P laser printer (DB25).

I have been unable to locate an adapter cable that is compatible with W7 and this LPT1 style printer.

Any ideas of where I may be able to obtain one?

    Thanks,
    CMOS

According to the Windows 7 HCL list this printer is compatible with Win7.

What adapter are you looking for? and why?

My MB does not have a DB25 Serial Port connector. That's why I need the cable that goes from USB (on my MB) to the Female DB25, with the correct driver of course.

    Thanks,

I'm not sure if such a cable exist, I would just get and add-in card to get a parallel port instead.

Belkin used to supply such a cable LPT1 > USB - had one years ago to run 2x LPT1 printers and dug it out last year when I upgraded to 7 from XP to run an HP Deskjet 520 printer.

Have to say it was not reliable - often had to disconnect/reconnect to get the printer to print and as for printing envelopes - no way :)

    Stick with Arie's suggestion.

Whew!! That's good because DB25 is a parallel port!! ;)

This would probably be the cheapest and easiest solution. But another solution, if you have a network, is to buy a print server that supports DB25. I have used a HP JetDirect 170X for years to stay connected to my old reliable HP-4L.

The advantages to using a print server are many.

    1. All computers on your network can print to it at once,
    2. No host computer is needed for connection, or to be powered on for others to print,
    3. No sharing needs to be enabled on a host computer,
    4. No messing with firewall settings for others to print,
    5. Printer can be centrally located, anywhere on the network, not tethered to any machine.

The only real disadvantage is cost. With your printer being pretty old already, and any new printer not likely to support a parallel connection, $100 would go a long way towards a new printer with modern communications.

    Bill,

I'm actually leaning your way as it is. Seems it might be time to just spend $75-$100 bucks and just get a new USB Inkjet.

    Thanks for the input.

Well, for $50 more, you could get a HP OJ6500 Wireless Multifunction Device. I've had mine since October and have no complaints. Yeah, it makes noises, and it is not the fastest kid on the block, but, so far at least I've been real happy with my print outs - and that's what it's all about. And what do want for less than $150? I had to list a complaint, I wish the blank paper tray held a whole ream, but that's not something you find in budget printers.

I've seen some complain about ink costs - I don't know what they compare with, but these new cartridges are a lot cheaper than my last printer, and last longer. And one person complained that the color inks were separate. I don't get that. The advantage of separates is if cyan runs out, you only have to buy cyan. If combined, you might be throwing out half the red and yellow just to refill cyan.
