I have an HP 9100 series burner and its behaving very strangely, I had it installed in another computer and it worked fine, but when i put it in my other pc the probs begin, It will not burn onto a cd-r disk only the cd-wr's, it comes up with an error code telling me it cant burn onto faster disks, and i know that this just insn't true. i even reinstalled it into the first pc to check, it was fine burning onto anything i put in it, but back in the 2nd pc it went to toast and only wants a 4speed cd-wr, it simply will not burn onto anything else.... So there is my dilemma, im guessing that as both pc's are very similar, it will be a setting of some sort, but im not to sure what to look for. my pc is running win98, 192 ram, and has a p2 cpu. this is really frustrating any help would me much appreciated.

Did you try a Control+Alt+Delete and close those programs that are running in the back ground. Just leave Explore and systray running then start your recording software and see if that helps.

Here's a link to the first in a series of four articles written by Sandra Underhill for trouble shooting a CD-RW. The links to the subequent articles are at the bottom of each page.

    CD-RW Troubleshooting

Hope the info can help you out. It worked for me.

You may need to check the HP support site for specific proprietary variations of your software if you are using the Adaptec or now called Roxio engine - there were some HP specific variations. Also you can try with and without DMA enabled on the drive and you may need to set PIO (definately seek tech support on the jumpers for this overide) - those are the six pins to the left of your sound connectors which are probably not jumpered right now. Still think your problem is ASPI related however. Did you run force ASPI? Update drivers? What did you do to fix your ASPI files?

Another thought - have you set your 9100 to run as the slave to your CDROM - if not, do so.

    ;)
